Drew McIntyre will defeat CM Punk at SummerSlam
Drew McIntyre versus CM Punk is a huge match set up for SummerSlam. It’s one that has been brewing since January, when McIntyre injured Punk, kicking off a series of events that impacted the main event scene. Now, the two men are finally able to get their hands on each other with Seth Rollins wearing the referee’s stripes. Looking ahead at the contest, all signs point toward McIntyre getting the big win.
McIntyre’s character arc the last year and change has been an interesting one. He’s a man who has been screwed over so many times that he’s taking it out on the people he’s deemed responsible. Looking at the list of men he’s put in the crosshairs, it makes sense why he’s done much of what he’s done. These men have had it coming.
However, that hasn’t translated into big victories. While he’s racked up wins on television, that hasn’t translated to PLEs, where he has a losing record this year. And one of those major victories only lasted about five minutes before he lost the WWE World Heavyweight Championship thanks to a Money in the Bank cash-in. McIntyre has lost a lot. Too much in the eyes of some. To keep him as a credible threat at the top of the card, it makes sense for him to pick up the victory at SummerSlam. And it can be done in a way that furthers the story between all three men involved.
This will be Punk’s first actual match since returning to WWE. It’s understandable that many see him as the favorite in this match. But in reality, Punk doesn’t need the victory at this time. Imagine if Rollins cost him the match either on purpose or inadvertently. That would allow McIntyre to begin to move on to other things, such as a brief push to toward the title. While he’s doing that Punk and Rollins can have their own mini feud, all for the three men to come full circle during Royal Rumble season. This story has chapters to tell and Punk doesn’t need the victory at this point for the story to continue.
CM Punk versus Drew McIntyre with Seth Rollins as the referee is perhaps the biggest story heading into SummerSlam. McIntyre and Punk will finally get their hands on each other, with Rollins there as the third wheel. There are a lot of different directions this angle can go, but it makes the most sense for McIntyre to pick up the victory at this point.
