The September 23 edition of Monday Night Raw had a huge moment that was as big of a surprise as it was exciting. Jey Uso defeated Bron Breakker clean to become the WWE Intercontinental Champion. This is his first singles title in his 14 years with the company. This is the type of surprise and career praise that makes professional wrestling and sports entertainment a joyous experience.

Jey Uso is a lightning rod of a performer. Since the start of the Tribal Chief angle with Roman Reigns, the one individual who has gained the most is his cousin Jey. As he said himself, he’s gone from being a twin to being “Main Event” and that showcase on Raw proved that point. The way the thirteen thousand-plus fans erupted when the referee counted to three is a moment that those in attendance and the millions watching will never forget.

These are the moments that professional wrestling and sports entertainment fans live to see. There are others that had similar responses. Think Adam Page defeating Kenny Omega for the AEW World Championship. Cody Rhodes pinning Roman Reigns. Biana Belair defeating Sasha Banks. Those were moments that kept fans on their feet from start to finish.

What made Uso defeating Breakker so wild is that no one saw it coming. Breakker was in the midst of a run that was set to establish him as a threat to any champion in the promotion. Fans are behind him. His presence was amazing. And he was delivering bell-to-bell. Breakker is a WWE superstar in every sense of the word. To see his first title run come to an end after 51 days is a decision that some don’t like, but one that infuses the promotion with excitement. Why? Because it shows that anyone can lose in moments that no one sees coming.

A singles championship run for Jey Uso will be an exciting push. There are so many different ways this can go. Uso is expected to find himself back into The Bloodline angle, standing next to his brother and cousins. But how will that play out if he’s also defending the championship? Does this mean he’ll find himself back on SmackDown full-time? What if this is just a quick run and he drops that belt back to Breakker in the weeks to come? There are so many questions and the only way to get the answers is to follow along. That is what draws fans in. Give them a reason to come back week after week.

Professional wrestling and sports entertainment are often predictable, and that is fine. But there are moments when surprises hit hard. Jey Uso defeating Bron Breakker is one of those moments and it is one that will not be soon forgotten.
