ROH: ATHENA is about to make history again and no one is talking about it

ATHENA is closing in on Samoa Joe's record for longest reigning champion in ROH history

As of episode 80 of Honor Club, ATHENA has been champion for 636 days. On September 15, she will break Samoa Joe's record of 645 days as ROH World Champion. She has already surpassed his most recent TV Championship reign of 574 days.

If you weren't aware of this, no one would blame you. ROH didn't start talking about it on Honor Club until a few weeks ago. They didn't even acknowledge her breaking 600 days as champion on social media, so unfortunately this isn't a surprise. AEW has not acknowledged either fact despite that all of the male champions are frequently featured on thier programming. They just had a title change on Collision a few weeks ago.

ATHENA was last on AEW programming way back at Battle of the Belts X in April. She defeated Red Velvet to retain her title. When ALL IN 2025 was announced at Globe Life Field, #YourForeverChampion was there. She represented ROH as champion and a native Texan. That created some hope that by the time July rolls around, she’ll have dropped her current title and would be in AEW full time.

One of the biggest complaints about ROH is that ATHENA is rarely on AEW programming when all the other male champions are (the ROH Women’s Television Champions have also not been on AEW programming in months). If your selling point for Honor Club is that this is where you see ATHENA wrestle, then you need to talk about her on AEW programming. Hype her up. She’s had an incredible reign, yet they never find the time to talk about it. So many people have forgotten that's where they can see her because AEW doesn't promote anything about her.

I have been spreading The Gospel of ATHENA’s record breaking title reign here, on social media, and my podcast. I’ve seen a handful of other media members and content creators talking about it a little bit. There are some fans talking about it, but they are regular ROH viewers. I ran a very scientific poll regarding the fact that the “Fallen Goddess” is closing in on history.

Although it’s a very small sample size, 63% of voters said they were aware that ATHENA was about to break this record. While there were less votes in the follow up poll about how they learned this information, 46% said it was from that very poll. Again it’s a tiny sample size. But the point stands that fans are finding out from other sources instead of the company itself. ROH isn’t promoting it on their social media. AEW certainly isn’t talking about it in any capacity. This is unacceptable.

When Jade Cargill made it to 500 days as TBS Champion, she received a graphic and it was hyped on TV and rightfully so. Posting a graphic is the bare minimum. ATHENA should be celebrated by both promotions. Wrestling media, podcasters, content creators, and fans alike should be making a very big deal out of this because it is a very big deal. Not only is a woman breaking this record, it is a Black woman. Black champions in wrestling have been few and far between in the major promotions until more recently. While we are witnessing history, everyone should be giving ATHENA her flowers like good little minions.
