Releases happen in professional wrestling, but that didn’t stop the community from being shocked when news broke that WWE cut ties with Cameron Grimes. Fans and colleagues rallied around him on social media to show support, as everyone was confused why WWE would release someone of his caliber. Looking at what he’s achieved in his career, and the response heard from all areas of wrestling, WWE made a massive mistake letting him go.

Grimes took to social media to show how hurt he was with the news. In his own words, all he wanted to do was work and backstage reports further confirm that. Fightful Select reported that Grimes’ release was “unexpected by many in the company for various reasons.” Grimes was recently used on television and was even present when he wasn’t put on air. Grimes appeared on Busted Open Radio on Thursday, where he revealed that a “pretty high executive” told him that he’d always have a job with the company.

“Literally the last time I was at TV, I had a pretty high executive tell me -- because, you know, I was worried,” Grimes said. “So I knew that I haven’t worked in over a year and I’m making a decent salary. So I knew that if someone was to look at the books, I’m going to be the first person that’s going to be cut. I was told by a high executive last week on Friday that I would have have a job here. I would never have to worry about losing my job here, after expressing my concerns like that to him.”

The reaction online made it clear that WWE made a huge mistake. Fightful’s report noted that “numerous top indies” already mentioned they would work to book him once his non-compete is over. There are so many big matches he could have across wrestling. For example, he could return to TNA Wrestling to take on Mustafa Ali, Nic Nemeth, Steve Maclin, Chris Bey, and several others. Of course, there’s going to be a “go to AEW” contingent ready to see Grimes mix it up with the likes of Kyle O’Reilly, Jay White, Will Ospreay, Bryan Danielson, and others. Many fans wanted to see Grimes get a strong shot on SmackDown, but that never came - an unforced error by WWE leadership.

Cameron Grimes, now going back to his Trevor Lee name, is a wildly talented professional wrestler and sports entertainer. He checked all the boxes that WWE looks for in its superstars in the eyes of many. The unfortunate news of his release caused many to express support for him and he’s going to go on a major run when he returns to the independent scene.
