Mercedes Mone as the belt collector has been one of the most divisive topics in wrestling this year. At least, divisive for people who enjoy finding a way to be upset about everything that she does. The story the whole time has been about Mone’s inability to win “the big one.” But things are about to take a turn for the worse as she’s going to eventually lose all those championships she’s won. That process has started, and the Mercedes Mone crash out is going to be an epic story to enjoy.
Mercedes Mone kissed the ROH Television Title goodbye at Ring of Honor Final Battle. She dropped the title to Red Velvet, who she defeated back in November to unify those titles. Velvet is a great choice to pick up that win, as it is perhaps the most important victory in her career to date. But what this does is it opens the door to not only is Mone beatable at nearly any moment, but she’s going to become paranoid that this is the truth as well.
Look at how Mone was clutching the TBS Championship backstage when she was approached by Lelia Gray, setting up their title match. She was holding onto the title like Golum holding on to his precious in The Lord Of The Rings series. That behavior carried over to how she behaved during AEW Collision, holding her submission on Gray long after she tapped out and then kicking Christoper Daniels low. The more she loses, the worse her behavior is going to become and it will be fun to watch every step of the way.
Mercedes Mone is going to go to the deepest darks before becoming the biggest babyface
After losing two opportunities to win the AEW Women’s World Championship, and losing in the AEW Women’s Tag Team Title Tournament, Mone’s success in All Elite Wrestling hinged on that TBS Championship. Yes, it looks awesome to see her holding all those belts, but they are mere participation trophies compared to that AEW Women’s World Championship which she has failed to obtain.
As she drops the multiple titles she has, Mone is going to become more and more of a loose cannon. Until all she has left is that TBS Championship. And then she’s going to lose that too. To whom? That’s a great question. Fans may think of top stars like Willow Nightingale or ATHENA as the women who should take the belt. But there are also individuals like Harley Cameron who could use a massive boost by picking up such a surprise victory. The options are nearly endless in AEW and that is another wrinkle that will make the story fun to enjoy. Regardless of who it is, someone is going to take that title and they will be a “made woman” with all the momentum behind them.
Only then will Mercedes Mone become the babyface. Only then will she make that trek back to the AEW Women’s World Championship. Only then will she win that title and hold it around her head. The story will go full circle. But before we get there, Mercedes Mone is going to lose it all and that is going to be some hilariously good, pro wrestling fun.
