AEW Revolution is set for this weekend and it’s a big card for the promotion. One of the featured matches of the night pits “Timeless” Toni Storm against Mariah May. This is the third matchup in their battle for dominance, with the AEW Women’s World Championship on the line. May and Storm have told one of the best stories in wrestling, with character work that runs circles around what others are doing in the business.
All Elite Wrestling praises itself as the promotion where “the best wrestle.” It’s hard to argue against that when the company consistently puts on bangers on a weekly basis. AEW Revolution features must see matches between Konosuke Takeshita and Kenny Omega, Will Ospreay versus Kyle Fletcher, and Mercedes Mone versus Momo Watanabe – each of which are expected to be amazing matches.
Toni Storm and Mariah May are doing excellent sports entertainment
However, Storm and May are proving that AEW can provide sports entertainment in a way that will get fans invested. Tony Khan has tried to do sports entertainment before, only with fans to roll to their eyes to focus back on the actual wrestling. Such is a complaint against the main event angle that has 51-year-old Cope challenging Jon Moxley. The angle is much more sports entertainment done wrong, than the wrestling AEW fans come to the company to see.
What Storm and May have done is give fans the reminder of character development over time. The second May stepped foot in AEW, it was clear that she was perfectly paired with Storm. While Storm was going off the deep end as a movie starlet, May was the figure locked in reality as her second to bring her back. Things slowly changed, and now May is the one who is seemingly gone nuts with obsession, while Storm is focused on reminding the world that she’s the best.
Storm and May have played off each other so well that there’s a slight concern about where they will go next. But what they’ve proven is that they can build stories around character development and arcs that lock fans in – almost regardless of what happens in the ring. That shows how powerful their character work has become in the last year.
The Falls Count Anywhere Match between Toni Storm and Mariah May at AEW Revolution 2025 is going to be a masterclass in storytelling. AEW has its own ways of telling stories within professional wrestling, but it fails to do so within the understanding of what sports entertainment has become. Still, Storm and May are excelling in that point and this is a testament to their great work both as individuals and allies in this angle.
