Some interesting news broke on Thursday, March 13. Fightful Select reported that WWE has "their eyes on top free agent talent." That talent is none other than Jeff Cobb. Cobb would be a massive addition to what is becoming a great start to the 2025 Free Agency race for WWE.
According to the report, Sean Ross Sapp "learned from a number of sources that WWE has had their eye on Jeff Cobb of late." The report even claims a source mentioned that Cobb was on internal rosters as of this week, but that has not be confirmed at this time.
Cobb hinted to his time in New Japan being over back in February, saying that perhaps it is "time to take my bags and go somewhere else."
Jeff Cobb would be a massive get for WWE
Jeff Cobb may not immediately ring any bells for casual or even hardcore WWE viewers, but he's a name that is well-known across professional wrestling. The former Olympian in Freestyle wrestling has been a worker across several of the largest promotions in wrestling.
Cobb has held championships in many different companies including NJPW, PWG, and Ring of Honor. His latest title run was in 2024 when he was the NJPW World Television Champion for 164 days. Cobb's latest match was on March 12 where he teamed with his United Empire stablemates to defeat TMDK.
Imaginging Jeff Cobb on WWE's roster creates several interesting matches. Think about matches like Cobb against performers like Bron Breakker, Jacob Fatu, GUNTHER, Sheamus and more. He has a heavy-hitting style that would fit right in with some of the toughest performers in the world. WWE NXT, Monday Night Raw, and SmackDown would each beneift from having a performer of his level.
Cobb has shown up in All Elite Wrestling as well. However, the Fightful Select report mentioned that he was not expected to join the Tony Khan-led company.
