Rey Fenix is on his way to WWE. No, it’s not officially confirmed yet, but the buzz around the wrestling world suggests it’s only a matter of time. The former AEW star — and one-half of the Lucha Brothers alongside new WWE superstar Penta — seems destined to land in the rival promotion in the near future.
While subtle, the company has already begun to plant the seeds for Fenix's eventual arrival. The Mexican-born Fenix was officially released from his AEW contract earlier this month, and rumors suggest he's WWE-bound soon.
It's possible that WWE is already planning for Fenix to have a program at the promotion's flagship event, WrestleMania. We're still a little over a month out from WrestleMania 41 in April, but the wheels are already in motion for Fenix's debut match.
This week's episode of Monday Night Raw on Netflix featured a tornado tag match between The New Day and the LWO team of Rey Mysterio and Dragon Lee. That match served as a precursor for the eventual Fenix payoff angle that we could see.
Rey Fenix's WWE WrestleMania program almost seems too obvious
The finish of the tornado tag match saw a masked superstar — presumably a returning Chad Gable — jump the barricade, take out Lee, and suplex Mysterio before delivering his signature “Thank Y—” … or should we say, “Gracias" catchphrase.
Gable was then escorted to the back by security, and when Cathy Kelley caught up with him backstage, the American Made head honcho denied that he was involved in the attack.
Of course, Kelley wasn’t buying Gable’s seemingly obvious denial until security was later seen escorting someone wearing the exact same mask out of the arena. Was Gable actually telling the truth?
No, obviously not. This is a classic wrestling red herring, much like Liv Morgan and Raquel Rodriguez were to the Jade Cargill-Naomi storyline. It's meant to create doubt, mislead the audience, and stretch out the mystery before the real culprit is revealed.
So, where does Fenix factor in here? It's simple.
Gable has spent months trying to "master the art of lucha libre." He traveled to Mexico, encountered a mysterious stranger in a dark alley who gifted him a box of unknown contents — presumably the mask he wore on Raw — and returned with a supposed newfound mastery of the art form.
In wrestling terms, he's feuding with the luchadors. This red-hot Raw angle lays the groundwork for Gable and his American Made stablemates, the Creed Brothers, to clash with a luchador trio at WrestleMania.
The obvious trio would be Mysterio, Lee, and the newly debuted Penta. However, if WWE secures Fenix in time, it wouldn’t be surprising to see the former Lucha Underground star replace Lee in that match.
It would be an eerily similar situation to what occurred with Lee a year ago, when a soon-to-be heel Carlito attacked the masked superstar and sidelined him for a planned WrestleMania match alongside Mysterio. Andrade would take his place in the tag match.
WWE loves long-term storytelling like this and could use Lee's repeated misfortunes to develop his character in the future, possibly leading to a heel turn. In the short term, it would be an exciting way to debut one of the company's newest high-profile additions.
Another option that could tie into the Raw angle would see The New Day replace the Creed Brothers as Gable's partners in the match. That would be a fun way to get Kofi Kingston and Xavier Woods on the WrestleMania card, even if it would come at the expense of showcasing younger talent.
Either way, Gable’s path to WrestleMania seems clear — he’s heading for a multi-man tag match against a trio of luchadors. If Rey Fenix (likely to be shortened to just Fenix) is under contract and ready to debut next month, this would be the perfect stage for his WrestleMania arrival.
