WarGames matches are a lot of fun but there's still value in having the traditional elimination style matches.

WWE Survivor Series: WarGames is shaping up as the November 30 date approaches. After this past week of action, it looks like the two WarGames matchups are set. One will feature the Bloodline Civil War while the other pits Rhea Ripley against Liv Morgan once again. While these matches will be fun, there should be room for the traditional five-on-five style matches as well. Leaving those off the card once again will be a mistake.

Survivor Series 2021 was the last time the PLE featured the five-on-five elimination matches. By that time, fans were long tired of the “Brand Supremacy” idea that meant nothing in the grand scheme of things. The days of the elimination matches having stakes or at least interesting storylines were long gone. Something had to change.

This is why many were excited that WarGames was introduced in 2022. A new flavor of the match sparked intrigue heading into the big event. 2024 will be the third time they are featured and the new shine is starting to wear off. It makes sense for The Bloodline angle to get to this point, as the entire angle is about two splinters of the same faction fighting it out. But the women’s match screams of it being forced together to make sure the women have their own showcase opportunity. It would be more interesting to see the women featured in important matches that advanced their own angles, rather than being shoved together for this single moment.

Then there’s the opportunity to have a traditional elimination-style match. Look no further to what is going on with The Wyatt Sicks and The Miz/Final Testament. That’s the perfect angle to book at least one elimination match on the card. This match would get one of the more popular acts on the show in the Wyatts while furthering their story about why they want to take out The Miz and Final Testament. This is also yet another shot to build interest in The Final Testament, a group that continues to struggle to gain any type of sustained momentum.

The elimination-style matches were great tools to build hype around performers. Much the way Dolph Ziggler, Kofi Kingston, Randy Orton, and Bianca Belair were featured as solo survivors over the years, there are several names on the main roster who could use a boost in such a way. Think about debuting a performer like Oba Femi in a spot where he decimates a team, or someone like Bron Breakker going on a tear through his opposition. Those are big moments that fans will remember but are widely lost now that those matches are no longer done.

The new creative regime in WWE is doing a great job making changes where changes make sense. However, that doesn’t mean that everything needs to be tossed out. There’s a place for the traditional elimination style matches at Survivor Series and here’s to hoping that 2024 sees at least one.
