The 2025 WWE Royal Rumble is right around the corner. This match is the kickoff to WrestleMania Season. Winning the Royal Rumble places a spotlight on the selected man and woman as they are heading into the biggest show of the year as the top contender to the title of their choice. The WWE Women’s Division is in an interesting and frustrating position heading into this match. The field should be wide open, but WWE’s booking of the women’s division makes it difficult to get excited about several performers at once. This is an opportunity for the WWE to do something different with whoever wins the women’s Royal Rumble, setting the tone for the future of the women’s division.

WWE currently has two women’s champions who both seem to be in for lengthy runs. Tiffany Stratton has secured the WWE Women’s Championship on SmackDown. Rhea Ripley has regained the WWE Women’s World Championship on Monday Night Raw. As of this writing, neither woman has held their title for more than 30 days. They are beloved fan favorites, and two women that WWE seems prepared to push to the moon. Ripley has already been cast as one of the stars the women’s division will be built around in the future. Stratton’s name was added to the shortlist the moment fans supported her in amazing ways after being called up to the main roster. At this point, it’s hard to see either woman losing their title at WrestleMania 41.

So, what does that mean for the rest of the division? There are a lot of questions as to who the favorites should be to win the Rumble. WWE could easily fall back on the shoulders of the Four Horsewomen. Charlotte Flair and Becky Lynch are rumored to be coming back soon, and they will be two huge returns for the night. Alexa Bliss is another name that is rumored to be coming back, and she’d be a first-time Royal Rumble winner that would light a spark in the women’s division. Then there’s someone like Naomi, another performer with a huge fan following who want to see her pushed to the moon.

But that brings the conversation back to the original thought. Do any of these ladies feel like viable challengers to either Ripley or Stratton? Would fans revolt if Flair or Lynch once again won another title at WrestleMania? Do fans want to see a new face elevated to start off 2025? If so, who?

This is the difficult aspect of booking a sports entertainment and professional wrestling promotion. WWE has several talented performers throughout its roster. But it tends to lean on the same few names in the women’s division, creating a situation where there are only a few viable names who could stand at the top.

The 2025 edition of the women’s Royal Rumble could be a moment in which that situation is blown up, and WWE shows its ready to put faith in new performers. Or it could be one in which they fall back to the same old booking decisions. Either way, this is an interesting match to watch unfold in a few short weeks.
