Contract news has been at the forefront this week. Santos Escobar became the latest name to walk away from WWE. As that dust settled, Fightful Select reported on Tuesday, October 7, that Xavier Woods is set to remain with the company after signing a multi-year extension.
According to Fightful, Woods’s deal was set to expire in September 2025. The report also mentions that the deal “came down to the wire,” with it finally being done in September. This is an important deal for the company, as Woods not only has a lot of value on screen each week, but he has a lot of value both in wrestling and entertainment behind it as well.
As a member of The New Day, Xavier Woods has become not only one of the best tag team wrestlers in history, but an icon as a Black man in pro wrestling. Many have dubbed this group to be the most important faction of this generation. They’ve carved out a special place for themselves as a team and individuals. In many ways, that legacy is still hampered by the glass ceiling they’ve helped fracture.
Woods has held 11 tag team championships while in the WWE, splitting the Tag Team and World Tag Team titles at five apiece, then adding in the NXT Tag Team Championship to round things out. He also won the King of the Ring back in 2021 when he defeated Ricochet, Jinder Mahal, and Finn Balor to capture the crown.
This immediately brings into question the contract status of the other members of The New Day. The Fightful Select report mentioned that back in 2019, Woods, Kofi Kingston, and Big E all signed new, matching deals with the company, but each man has suffered injuries since then, which could add injury time.
Fans often complain about The New Day’s current placement on the roster. They recently captured the WWE World Tag Team Championship, holding that title for 72 days in a run that didn’t amount to much. Fan investment was high after they turned on Big E, but that momentum died out quickly after their creative direction didn’t include any viable follow-up. Now, they are back to being a comedic heel talent each week on Monday Night Raw.
Xavier Woods is a popular member of the WWE roster and one who will find himself in the WWE Hall of Fame. He’s re-signed with the company, locking himself into the roster for an extended period of time.
