WWE WrestleMania 33: Kevin Owens vs. Chris Jericho Set

On the post-Fastlane episode of WWE Raw, Kevin Owens vs. Chris Jericho would be confirmed for WrestleMania 33.

The end of Kevin Owens and Chris Jericho’s friendship came on an episode of Raw in February. It seemed inevitable with WrestleMania 33 approaching, but came during their Festival of Friendship segment that seemed set to highlight their work together from the past eight months. When Owens presented a gift to Jericho, however, it led to him turning on his fellow Canadian and kicking off their feud.

At Fastlane, Jericho appeared just as Owens’ match with Goldberg started for the Universal Championship. This distracted KO enough to let Goldberg take advantage and win in 21 seconds.

Well, on the following episode of Raw, Jericho challenged Owens to a match at WrestleMania 33. It would be accepted, but only with the United States Championship on the line. This was agreed to as well, and made this the second official match for April 2.

The United States Championship hasn’t received this big of a spotlight since WrestleMania 31, when John Cena defeated Rusev for the belt. He went on to make the title feel important throughout 2015, hosting the U.S. Open Challenge, producing some of WWE’s best matches of the year.

With Jericho, he’s potentially leaving WWE after WrestleMania for a Fozzy hiatus, so it’s possible the title changes hands at the show. That would give Owens a championship just one month after losing the right to being Champion of the Universe. If he wins, will the United States title be put back into the spotlight?
