Brock Lesnar defeats John Cena for the WWE World Heavyweight Championship
Mike Smith’s Take:
Those who thought that Cena might pull this one out, you couldn’t have been more wrong. Lesnar didn’t beat Cena, he destroyed him.
This match made me very uncomfortable, and even made me a little nauseous at times, which is exactly what they were going for.
Lesnar hit Cena with 16 suplexes, and 2 F-5’s, in a match that was far from a thing of beauty, yet it was absolutely perfect.
Some people may be mad that Cena hit an AA, and locked in the STF close to the end of the match, but he was never even in it, and Michael Cole’s loss of belief in Cena punctuated this match extremely well.
Rob Wolkenbrod’s Take:
Every single match tonight was booked terrifically. This fight was booked to perfection.
Brock Lesnar still had monumental momentum from Wrestlemania XXX that carried over into this WWE World Heavyweight Championship match against John Cena. The expectation was for Lesnar to indeed win the title. The way how it went down was shocking, though.
Cena’s character, as we all know, is known to overcome all of the odds. As Lesnar beat him down throughout the match, I kept thinking “Okay, WWE is doing the usual. Cena gets beat up and just as he looks done, he rises to the occasion.” It did look like that a few times, but the Cenation leader only had small spurts of offense that would be stopped by sixteen suplexes.
Sixteen suplexes!
It was complete domination that played Brock up so well as this unstoppable beast. From the moment he hit an F-5 about 90 seconds into the match, you could see where this was going. The more Cena got beat up, the better the booking for this got.
Now the question will be the length of this championship reign for Lesnar. Him being a champion who does not defend his title at every PPV is unprecedented, but could be excellent for the rest of the roster. I think we just brain-stormed a future article.
