Rey Mysterio Should Have Followed in Shawn Michaels’ Footsteps

Rey Mysterio should have taken the Shawn Michaels career route.

Imagine yourself working your dream job at the age of 14 and doing that job for the next 20 years of your life, would you be tired?  Of course you would be, who wouldn’t? Working that long doing anything is enough to make anyone tired.  So imagine how Rey Mysterio must have felt the last few years in the WWE – the guy was burned out.

The life of a professional wrestler is not an easy one.  It requires a lot of travel, a lot of commitment and a lot of time away from your family.  You will run your body down and have a long list of injuries – just as Mysterio has had.

The pressure to come back and not lose your spot is something all wrestlers go through. This goes for Rey as well.  The rehab from those injuries is grueling. Add those two factors up and becoming burned out will happen to anyone.

This is where I think Mysterio should have looked at Shawn Michaels and followed his path.  HBK went on haitus after his WrestleMania XIV match against Stone Cold Steve Austin.  There were many reasons for HBK’s long vacation.  His back injury was the biggest reason but also his battle with drugs and alcohol, the physical and mental baggage he had from being on the road for so long took its toll on him.

In his nearly four-year absence, Michaels rested himself physically, emotionally and mentally.  He came back a new man and a better man.  Finding faith and letting himself rest completely rejuvenated his career.  When he came back in 2002, he was better than ever.

I feel this is what Rey Mysterio needs. Not a change of companies, a new story, another push, but a break. Taking a couple of years off to rest himself and spend time with his family I think would have done more for him than leaving the WWE in the way he did.

If Mysterio took two years off from everything professional wrestling and then made a return to wrestling, he could have one last great run to cap off his legendary career. He wouldn’t have had a rough end to his WWE tenure. He could have walked away fulfilled and gone out his way and at peace.

His “last run” wouldn’t have to be with the WWE. Mysterio could do that with Lucha Underground or any other organization. However, I do feel that he needs to step away and recharge the batteries for a while and then return.

The way he left the WWE I think will only eat away at him for a while like other’s who left on bad terms.  Maybe I’ll be wrong or maybe he is at peace with leaving the way he did.  I hope he is and I hope he is happy with his career path that he is on.
