Last night, WWE announced the return of the King of the Ring tournament. This will start tonight on Monday Night RAW and conclude with a live special on the WWE Network tomorrow night with the semi-finals and finals. This will be at the Thursday Night SmackDown taping.
WWE has not had a King of the Ring tournament since 2010, when Sheamus won. This propelled him to title wins and an upper card spot on the main roster. With all the young talent on the roster, who could become the next Sheamus?
Before that’s assessed, it wouldn’t be surprising if this becomes a #1 contender’s tournament for the WWE World Heavyweight Championship. With less than three weeks until WWE Payback, figuring out who faces Rollins would be ideal here. However, given last night’s shaky finish, Randy Orton is the favorite to get another match with the champion. This would mean that he probably wouldn’t be competing in the tournament.
So, who has the greatest odds of winning King of the Ring?
Dean Ambrose
Ambrose’s chances are low, but if WWE is looking to build a new star, he would be an interesting option.
Neville
Throwing Neville into the fire like this would be the wrong move. However, WWE seems to love him and he has impressed the fans, so he has an outside shot.
Sheamus
With the Celtic Warrior getting a significant push, he has a shot of repeating as the winner of the King of the Ring.
Rusev
WWE is going to have to build Rusev up again with two consecutive losses to John Cena. This could be the opportunity to do that.
Bray Wyatt
This would be a terrific launching pad for the Eater of Worlds, who could cement his spot on top of the roster with winning this tournament. Couldn’t you see him steamrolling other Superstars with Sister Abigail?
Roman Reigns
With WWE looking to rebuild Roman Reigns after WrestleMania along with his strong showing last night, he is the clear cut favorite. Adding a King of the Ring win would add to his resume of winning the Royal Rumble and being in the main event of WrestleMania.
So, who do you think will win the WWE King of the Ring tournament? Check out the opening rounds tonight and the finals tomorrow to find out.
