Last night in front of his home country crowd, Sami Zayn made his main roster debut answering John Cena’s US Championship Open Challenge. The former NXT Heavyweight Champion was introduced by fellow Canadian Bret Hart, and received by far the biggest pop of the entire night. Zayn held his own in his match with Cena, looking strong in defeat and even kicking out of an AA. Afterwards, Cena raised Zayn’s hand to show his respect for the debuting superstar.
WWE fans have waited for Zayn’s main roster debut for months now. He had been a regular on house-show circuits and European tours, and the WWE Universe wants to see what Sami can do on the main roster. Here’s a look at a few options for Sami Zayn’s first main roster feud.
Luke Harper
Harper doesn’t seem to have direction coming out of his loss to Dean Ambrose at Extreme Rules. He took the loss, and now Ambrose finds himself in the main event at Payback. Harper, meanwhile, seems to have as much direction as his former Wyatt family brother Erick Rowan. Harper would provide great matches with Zayn as he is a tremendous worker with a lot of talent. He plays a great monster heel, and Zayn could look resilient in his efforts to overcome Harper. Just for match quality, this is a feud I’d like to see.
Curtis Axel
I really, really just want to see Zayn cut a promo on the ridiculousness that is Axelmania. Curtis Axel has found a great role coming out of the Royal Rumble, but to let him sustain any sort of momentum or intensity with it, he needs a legitimate feud. Zayn could be that feud. Axel could say he is frustrated with how the fans love the “Ole” chants that Zayn brings, and say that he is the real champion of the people.
Axel is a talented performer and a solid hand in the ring. The matches he could put on with Zayn would be good, and would give Zayn a great way to go over for his first main roster feud.
The Miz
There are few WWE Superstars who are as humble and appreciative of the fans as Sami Zayn. In direct contrast to this, there are few Superstars who are as appreciative of themselves as the Miz. These two would represent polar opposites, one who does it for the love of the fans and the other who does it for the money and the fame. The Miz is an established star on the main roster, and could take a loss or two to Zayn to help legitimize him in the eyes of fans who do not watch NXT. The Miz generates real heel heat from his promos, and by battling with Zayn would make him a strong face on the main roster.
These are just a few ideas of guys Zayn could find himself tangling with in the next few months. Who else would you like to see, or who would you like to see further down the road? Sound off in the comments below.
