1999

It seems odd that right in the heart of the Attitude Era there was such a weak SummerSlam, but 1999 was not an event many remember fondly, if indeed they remember it at all. The main event was a triple threat match for the WWE Championship between Stone Cold Steve Austin, Triple H and Mankind. Austin was working hurt which in turn damaged the interest of the match, and the decision to have Mankind go over and win the belt has retrospectively been regarded as nonsensical. Indeed, Triple H would capture the belt the very next night on RAW, making this title match of complete irrelevance going forward.

The undercard beneath this unnecessary championship battle were all matches that could have easily been overlooked by the next night. The Rock was wasted in a “Kiss My Ass” match with Billy Gunn, Test beat Shane McMahon to win the right to continue seeing Stephanie McMahon during their drab relationship, and Mark Henry turned on D’Lo Brown in arguably the most significant part of the entire show. It was no better than an episode of RAW, which might not have been a bad thing in the Attitude Era, but in this case it just didn’t live up to the SummerSlam legacy.
