WWE SummerSlam 2015: Time For John Cena’s 16th World Title Reign?

facebooktwitterreddit

WWE SummerSlam 2015 promises to be a can’t miss event. WWE SummerSlam could also be the sight of history if John Cena defeats Seth Rollins and begins his 16th World Title reign. A 16th World Title Reign for Cena would tie him with Ric Flair for the most all-time.

John Cena is a polarizing figure.

Cena is loved by females and children and hated by males. Personally, I lean closer to respecting Cena than I do hating Cena.

But regardless of what you feel about Cena, there is no question that WWE is in an interesting position when it comes to his champion versus champion match against Seth Rollins on Sunday at WWE SummerSlam. Cena’s United States Championship is on the line while Rollins’ WWE World Heavyweight Championship is on the line. The winner of the match would lay claim to both titles.

Meaning, if Cena defeats Rollins on Sunday, it will mark history in the WWE. A victory over Rollins on Sunday would ignite Cena’s 16th World Title reign. A mark that would place Cena alongside WWE Hall of Famer Ric Flair for the most World Title reigns of all time.

The question that WWE needs to answer before Sunday night is if now is the right time for Cena’s 16th World Title Reign?

The answer to that question is complicated.

The standard in WWE whenever they don’t know what to do with the WWE World Heavyweight title is to place the belt on Cena. Beyond that, WWE is not afraid to book Cena as a superior champion by giving him clean victories over any opponent he faces.

But, let’s be honest for a moment.

Rollins is not just any other opponent. Rollins, more so than any other superstar to be promoted from NXT, has been booked as a main-event talent while serving as a pupil to Triple H.

The problem is that since Rollins won the WWE World Heavyweight title at Wrestlemania 31, his booking has been the opposite of strong as he essentially has been allergic to clean victories. In order to protect Rollins from what could be a catastrophic downfall to the mid-card, WWE needs to give the former NXT champion a clean victory while defending his WWE World Heavyweight title.

In a perfect world, Rollins would get that clean victory over Cena at SummerSlam. But WWE does not live in a perfect world and there is no way that Rollins will be booked to have a clean victory over Cena on Sunday.

Beyond weighing whether this is the right time for Cena’s 16th World Title reign, WWE needs to figure out a way to protect Rollins.

Therefore, the only conclusion that can be reached is that now is not the right time for Cena’s 16th World Title reign. The build up of Rollins is simply too important. Rollins needs to leave SummerSlam with the WWE World Heavyweight Championship and that is why Cena’s historic moment needs to be put on hold for the time being.
