Fans who have waited patiently to see CM Punk’s first UFC fight will now have to wait until early next year.
UFC on Friday night held its “Go Big” launch event. This event is where UFC announces their fight cards for the remainder of the year. Punk’s name was not mentioned on any of the cards announced. This means unless anything drastically changes Punk, won’t be fighting until 2016.
Punk, who has said in past interviews that he wanted to have his first fight in December, may now have to wait until early 2016. Punk has been training with Duke Roufus at his academy in Milwaukee. The camp also features former UFC Lightweight Champion Anthony Pettis.

According to WrestleZone, people Punk’s camp say his training has gone very well but it seems UFC doesn’t feel Punk is in a spot where they feel comfortable throwing him into the octagon yet. Before entering this camp Punk had no background in the fighting world, so he has only had 9-10 months of fight training in his life. Another issue is UFC has yet to decide what weight class Punk will actually fight in. Its been rumored that he will fight in the welterweight class.
Punk, who controversially left WWE back in January 2014, announced back in December that he had signed with UFC. He has spent all of 2015 training for his first fight.
Punk will be 37 years old when his first fight finally happens. Because of his age, his UFC career window may be short. It seems that he’ll have his first fight in the Jan.-Mar. area of 2016. Whenever he does enter the octagon, Punk’s fight will be must see, whether you’re rooting for him or against him.
Jay’s Note: UFC has been struggling for PPV buys this last year because of injuries and poor match cards. If I was UFC, I would put Punk’s first fight alongside another top fight. UFC should put Punk’s fight with the likes of either Ronda Rousey, Chris Weidman, or Connor McGregor’s next fight. Pairing Punk’s fight with another top fighter’s bout would draw interest from both the wrestling crowd who wants to watch Punk and the UFC fans who want to see a popular fighter. This move would put UFC on the right foot to start 2016.
