30 Greatest Gimmick Match Types in WWE History
- Battle Royal
A match that has been used to determine a number one contender or to fill time on the show, the Battle Royal clocks in at number 28 on our list.
The Battle Royal could be considered the store-brand version of the Royal Rumble, it’s supposed to achieve the same result but there is something missing. All the superstars start in the ring when the bell rings, taking away any surprises and pops when the buzzer hits and another superstar comes out.
The WWE however have used battle royals when a championship is vacated. When an injury occurs and there is some time between PPV’s, the WWE writing team has used battle royals to get belts on different guys in order to start feuds and programs in time for the upcoming show. SmackDown was famous for doing this back during the Teddy Long Era.
Today we don’t see as many battle royals anymore and when we do, it’s normally a diva’s battle royal that no one cares about. Just like the store-brand, same idea just not as good as the original. It’s because of the un-importance of some of these battle royals that it is so far down on this list. But it still has given us some great moments, like The Great Khali winning the World Heavyweight Championship in 2007 and then holding the belt upside down.
