  1. Special Referee Match

When the regular referee isn’t good enough to settle a feud, the WWE has gone to their own superstars to wear the zebra shirts and count the 1, 2,3.

Nothing settles a feud like having a special referee that neither men like. The special referee match has been an interesting gimmick that the WWE has employed to spice up some of their feuds. Having a superstar take the place of a referee brings in all sorts of different elements to the table. A slower count, an impartial judge not being impartial and personal grudges getting involved. It is a wonderful tool to help tell a story, and potential screw over a wrestler that’s had it coming.

The only take back to one of these matches, is that everybody that is aware knows what is going to happen. There’s no need for a special referee unless something screwy is about to happen. For example, Triple H being the special guest referee for Daniel Bryan vs. John Cena at SummerSlam in 2013. Everybody in the building knew that Triple H was not there to just “call it down the middle.” In the end, Triple H helped Randy Orton become the new face of the WWE and started a six-month long program with the Authority against Daniel Bryan.
