Bray Wyatt: A Victim of Unfulfilled Opportunities in WWE
By Dean Siemon
Despite Bray Wyatt being one of the most popular stars in WWE, there have been way too many chances to elevate the “Eater of Worlds” gone wasted. The hope is that Wyatt’s second feud with the Undertaker will yield the results that are best for business.
If someone continues to say something that has no backing whatsoever, everyone starts to ignore the worlds being exclaimed, like white noise that you know is playing in the background but not important enough to pay attention.
In many ways, Bray Wyatt has become the boy who cried wolf in World Wrestling Entertainment – spreading messages of doom as the “Eater of Worlds” with a path of destruction left by him. His words are strong and the way he’s expressed is one of the biggest reasons why there is a cult following of fans that greet him with cell phones acting as fireflies.

However, his statements have not been supported by any of his actions and leaving many opportunities unfulfilled. Looking at many of his big feuds in the past couple of years, there’s little reason to really take Wyatt as a legitimate threat against someone like the Undertaker and Kane in what seems to be an upcoming Survivor Series battle in November.
When he first debuted on June 8, 2013, episode of Raw with Luke Harper and Erick Rowan following, Wyatt accumulated successful wins over names like Kane, Kofi Kingston and Daniel Bryan. But it felt some of the steam of the rising star who was being booked as the “new face of fear” started to falter after losing to John Cena at WrestleMania 30 in 2014.
Despite Wyatt getting some revenge on Cena at the Extreme Rules pay-per-view about a month later, he lost the rubber match at Payback in a Last Man Standing match. Since then, Wyatt’s winning percentage was closer to .500 with wins over Chris Jericho, Ryback and Dean Ambrose. However, he was finding himself unable to capitalize in big matches.
At WrestleMania 31 earlier this year, it felt like he had a chance to be elevate his status to some degree against the Undertaker – even though the Deadman’s undefeated streak was ended the year before and Wyatt couldn’t really build his own after losing to Cena. Yet Wyatt fell, despite several weeks of promising to take his place.

Since then, Wyatt had one successful feud over Ryback, who didn’t seem phased afterwards as he would claim the Intercontinental Championship shortly after, and months of battling Roman Reigns that would essentially end with the two splitting tag team matches and Reigns winning at Hell in a Cell this past Sunday.
Fans want to like Wyatt because he is very talented in the ring for a 285-pound man while also having some of the best skills on the microphone. However, the match results are not in favor of Wyatt and haven’t supported what he claims on the microphone and through backstage vignettes.
So when the Wyatt Family attacked Undertaker after losing his match with Brock Lesnar, there were a lot of questions. For one, what does Undertaker have left to fight after months of looking weaker in his feud with Lesnar. What could happen is that we finally see a passing of the torch from Undertaker to Wyatt to become the newest Phenom.
Yet there’s nothing really that can make it believable until it happens after months of WWE’s creative team missing multiple chances to elevate one of their more popular superstars to come out of their NXT developmental system. The best thing is for Wyatt to get the upper hand in the rivalry starting at Survivor Series, meaning that he cannot lose and allow for the momentum to make an interesting story for Wyatt to be Undertaker’s final opponent.
Anything else would just be the result of another failed opportunity to create a top superstar in Wyatt.
