WrestleMania 32: How to Build Roman Reigns vs. Triple H

facebooktwitterreddit

Just because Roman Reigns is the WWE World Heavyweight Champion doesn’t mean that we can’t see Triple H taking some actions that lead to them clashing at WrestleMania 32 in April.

While the two have never really faced off in an official match, there is a lot of history between Roman Reigns and Triple H – starting back to when the Shield feuded with Evolution in the months prior to Seth Rollins turning heel and causing the breakup of the dominant faction in Jun. 2014.

It’s interesting that Reigns made comments a week after Rollins’ turn saying that Triple H was the big problem. And yet, Reigns would find himself in a variety of feuds with the goal of going after the WWE World Heavyweight Championship. Triple H and the Authority were involved in many ways, but never physically until after the main event of the TLC pay-per-view a few weeks ago.

More from WrestleMania

An angered Reigns attacked Triple H with several chair shots, putting him through the Spanish announce table and then a spear outside of the ring for good measure. So when I planned out my column schedule on Monday morning, I planned to write about how we would see the beginning of a feud between the two that leads to a match at WrestleMania 32.

Now I will admit that I was expecting to see some repercussions and possibly a suspension of some kind, maybe forcing Reigns to wrestle in an insane gauntlet match. And yet, we got a bit of a swerve with him winning the championship over Sheamus and giving Vince McMahon the superman punch.

  • I’ll admit, Monday Night Raw may have changed what I was originally going to write. But part of journalism is being able to adapt; and in sports journalism, you have to be willing to rewrite when a baseball team scores five runs in the bottom of the ninth to win the game – the headline and lead of your story has changed.

The beautiful thing about this topic is that there is still hope and the big reason can be answered with one question: If you weren’t going to have them feud, why would Reigns beat up Triple H in the first place?

Now assuming Triple H returns from the U.K. from the recent NXT Takeover event, we should see him start to make life a somewhat living hell starting this Monday. Maybe we see the COO tease that he’s going to fire Reigns and strip him of the championship.

Or maybe, we see him decide to make it hard for him to hold onto the title. Book the rematch at Royal Rumble between Reigns and Sheamus, where Reigns will retain. Then we could see a continued war of words every week as Triple H forces Reigns to defend the championship every night that will wear him down leading up to Elimination Chamber; where he will likely retain the championship in an extremely brutal match with five challengers.

So then where would we go from there? That’s when we start seeing Triple H reveal that if the people he’s selected to challenge Reigns can’t get the job done, then maybe he has to do it himself. It will seem like an abuse of power by a man of authority in WWE, but we’ve seen it before and it likely won’t be the last time an authority figure is in a title match of some kind.

This will be a big payoff for a longer storyline that started with a post-match brawl after the company’s December pay-per-view. Now hopefully, the promo work can help deliver the feud’s booking.
