Is Shane McMahon the Savior of WWE?

Ever since WrestleMania, something has felt different on WWE TV, the Shane McMahon factor has made a massive impact.

In one of the featured matches at WrestleMania, Shane McMahon faced The Undertaker in a Hell match. A handful of stipulations were tagged on to the match, the major one being the fact that if Shane won then he would gain control of Monday Night Raw. We saw one hell of a match between the two men, with Shane even going as far as to throw himself off the top of the Cell, onto Undertaker on the announce table at ringside (he moved out of the way at the last minute), before finally getting pinned and losing the match.

On the following nights Raw we saw Vince McMahon bring out Shane, to basically tell his son how proud he was of how far he was willing to go to gain control of the company. The crowd was so far behind Shane that Vince decided to give him the chance to be in charge of Raw, despite the fact that he had lost the match (hey who needs to stick to the storylines). What followed was one of the best episodes of Raw we’d seen in a long time, that was probably always going to happen though as the post ‘Mania Raw is always a great show.

Following that we were treated to the news, via Twitter, that Shane would be in charge again this past week, mainly because the WWE Universe had reacted so well to Shane being in charge last week. How could they not have been happy though? Gone was The Authority. Gone was the 20 minute, show opening promo that didn’t really achieve anything other than annoy the crowd. Gone was the usually nonsensical main event match that meant little to the overall story lines.

In came debuts of some of the hottest properties in NXT, Baron Corbin, Apollo Crews, Enzo and Big Cass. We ended up with one of the best wrestlers in the world as your new number one contender to the WWE title, after a great match in the main event spot on the show. We got to see a new feud being for the Women’s Championship, one that finally sees Natalya get the push she deserves. We saw the return of a man, Cesaro, who can be a massive part of the upper echelons of the company for years to come.

There was just a feel of the WWE actually wanting to entertain the crowd. With matches and angles that they want to see, rather than just throwing men at us that the creative team think deserve to be thrust into the limelight. The fact that AJ Styles walked out of Shane McMahon’s first night as the boss as the second most important guy in the company, says a lot about how WWE sees Styles and his actually standing in the company.

There’s no doubt that Shane’s second night in charge of Raw was just as important as his first. He set up so much with a simple opening promo, from setting up a tag team tournament for the number one contendership to establishing his defiance to Kevin Owens’ attitude to things. Shane basically sat back and let the men and women do their best in the ring. Whilst he’s supposed to be the man at the top he doesn’t need to be on-screen every few minutes, or be out in the ring talking for what seems like an endless amount of time. He pops up when he is needed, to set up a match or to pat someone on the back, and doesn’t feel the need to be the centre of attention for every minute of the show.

The two episodes of Raw where Shane has been at the helm have, probably, already produced as many good matches as the rest of the episodes of Raw that we’ve seen in 2016. There’s no doubt we’ll at some point soon see the return of Stephanie McMahon and Triple H as The Authority. There’s equally as much chance that they won’t be very happy with the fact that Shane has made a pretty big impression on the standard of the TV output in only a couple of weeks.

Professional Wrestling doesn’t have to be the convoluted mess that WWE often makes it feel like. At its most basic level it’s all about two men or women going into the ring to produce the best quality match that they can. It can be all about good versus evil, but at the end of the day what happens inside that twenty-foot square ring is the be all and end all. If the action is good, and the results makes sense, then the crowd will be happy.

Shane McMahon has made a hell of a difference in only two short weeks. Lets just hope that he is allowed the opportunity to continue in charge of Raw that he continues to smash everything he’s involved in out of the park. Keep up the good work Shane and the WWE Universe will always have your back.
