WWE Payback 2016: Should Finn Balor Debut?
By Carl Gac
He’s one of the greatest wrestlers to ever set foot in NXT, but should Finn Balor make his main roster debut at WWE Payback?
In the last few weeks, we’ve seen a whole lot of debuts on the WWE main roster. A handful of the former stars from NXT have made the step up to appearing on Raw and SmackDown since WrestleMania. There is one man who could make the most impressive impact on the main roster, and in a couple of weeks time, he should make that step up. Finn Balor can light a fire under the main event scene, and set in motion the biggest storyline that WWE has ever seen.
If you saw this week’s episode of Monday Night Raw, you’d have witnessed a rather intriguing angle. It involved Doc Gallows, Karl Anderson, and AJ Styles, with Roman Reigns, pulled into the proceedings as well. Gallows, Anderson, and Styles were all part of the massively successful Bullet Club faction in New Japan Pro Wrestling, and apparently Gallows and Anderson have made their journey to WWE to help Styles win the WWE title from Reigns.

Despite the fact that Styles looked dumbfounded, and denied any knowledge of his former friends coming to help him, you can’t help but feel it’s all part of a plan to try and take over WWE. What could be a better way to achieve that, than adding another man who wore the familiar black and white Bullet Club t-shirt?

Finn Balor is without doubt one of the most famous NXT alumni. He has held the NXT title for a record-breaking period of time and become one of the men who is a cornerstone of that promotion. It’s been rumoured for a while now that Balor could possibly be making the move up to starring on Raw and SmackDown. He defeated his biggest rival, Samoa Joe, at NXT TakeOver: Dallas to retain his NXT title and looks like he could hold that belt for as long as he feels he wants to. One thing that is worth noting is that during the Axxess portion of WrestleMania weekend, three episodes of NXT TV were taped. The final one of which airs on the Wednesday before Payback. Balor did not make an actual in-ring appearance but a few promos were cut by him, could that be counted as evidence of something big about to happen for the NXT Champion?

With the mystery surrounding the actions of Gallows and Anderson, then Payback would be the perfect place to add Finn Balor to the mix as well. With Styles on the verge of losing to Reigns, Gallows and Anderson make their way to ringside. Despite the fact that Styles has said that he knows nothing about their presence, you get even more of a feeling that they are here to help him tonight. Reigns hits Styles with the Superman Punch and leaves him down in the ring as Gallows and Anderson get up onto the ring apron.
That leads to The Usos coming down to the ring to level the scores, pulling the new guys off the apron and brawling on the floor. With Reigns distracted and Styles down, a mysterious figure jumps over the barricade and attacks Reigns in the ring. The hooded figure knocks Reigns to the mat and heads to the top rope. Jumping off he hits the Coupe De Grace and leaves Reigns down and out. He drags Styles on top of Reigns and the referee turns to make the match-winning three count. We have a brand new WWE World Heavyweight Champion.

As a shell-shocked Styles realises what just happened, the hooded figure and Gallows and Anderson stand behind him in the ring. They hold up the “Too Sweet” hand gesture and Styles reciprocates to the three of them. Styles then pulls down the hood to reveal Balor underneath. We end the show with AJ Styles as the WWE Champion, alongside NXT Champion Finn Balor and the new terrors of the tag division, Anderson, and Gallows, standing over a beaten Roman Reigns. Until now we didn’t know what the true motive of Styles and his new comrades, but in the space of a few minutes it instantly became clear they are here to take over. WWE may never be the same again.
