Analyzing Big Cass as WWE Singles Star

A look at how Big Cass could end up as a singles star.

When Enzo Amore suffered a horrifying injury at WWE Payback, it seemed that it couldn’t have come at a worse time for him and his partner, Colin Cassady.  The team, fresh off an exciting run on NXT, caught on very quickly with the main roster audience and seemed poised for a run at the WWE Tag Team Championship in the very near future.  With two quick wins over The Ascension and The Dudley Boyz putting them into the finals of the No. 1 Contenders tournament, it was clear that the team were being viewed as less than just an entertaining act and more of a legitimate title contending duo.

So the loss of Amore should be massive, right?  Well, not so fast.

The night after Payback, Big Cass quickly made his presence felt on RAW by interrupting a segment between The New Day, The Vaudevillains, and The Dudleyz.  Big Cass, who usually plays second fiddle to Enzo when it comes to mic work, made the most of his opportunity, dressing down the heels and forcing an impromptu 8 man tag match.  Once again seizing the moment, Big Cass took a hot tag late in the match and set the crowd on fire.  The match ended with Cass clearing the ring and finishing off D-Von Dudley with his patented East River Crossing finisher.

So as if his first appearance riding solo couldn’t have gone any better, he followed it up the following week by appearing in the opening segment with Chris Jericho.  He matched Jericho, a master on the microphone line for line and then did the same with physicality, planting a boot in Y2J’s face and sending him to the floor.  Now, this didn’t end up turning into the main event match it looked like it would as Dean Ambrose crashed the show and attacked Jericho, furthering their feud.  However, the fact that the WWE would make Big Cass look as strong as he did against a former six-time world champion is clearly something to keep an eye on.

At 7 feet tall, Big Cass is an outstanding promo guy as well as being fluid and explosive in the ring.  Outside of The Undertaker (6’10”, close enough), he is the only 7-footer in the history of WWE with this level of athleticism.  As we’ve seen in the past, the company loves to push the big guys.  Guys like Diesel, Kane, and The Big Show all had world championship runs and they didn’t have the shear ability that Cass does (and please, don’t get me started on The Great Khali).  Could that type of success be in The Big Bambino’s future?

Well, why not?  Cass fits all the criteria of a future champion.  He has the size, the in-ring ability, the verbal skills, originality, and the biggest x-factor: the fans are behind him.

Is Enzo’s injury a blessing in disguise?  What seemed to be Cass’ biggest plus might be exactly what was holding him back.  Although a foot shorter and 75 lbs lighter, Enzo always seemed to overshadow Cass,  He’s a huge personality that commands attention so much so that it blurred his partner into the background.  However, Enzo is nowhere near as talented an in-ring worker as Cass.  That’s where it seemed the 7-footer’s main advantage laid.  But now by himself, he seems like the total package.

The next few months will be very telling for Big Cass.  With the WWE’s responsibility to protect their employees with concussions, there is no chance that they will rush Enzo back.  That will give the opportunity for Cass to flourish all by himself.  If the last two weeks are any indication of his future, the sky may be the limit for The Babe Ruth of Beatdown.
