Roman Reigns Suspension from WWE a Blessing in Disguise
By Dean Siemon
Roman Reigns being suspended 30 days for a talent wellness policy violation isn’t a bad thing, but a good thing for WWE’s main event picture.
The news that Roman Reigns was suspended for 30 days after his first violation of the WWE’s talent wellness policy does impact the recently announced main event for WWE Battleground. However, I’ll take a page out of the 2001 version of Diamond Dallas Page and state that Reigns’ suspension isn’t really a bad thing – it’s a good thing.
While it’s true that Reigns has improved in the ring in the recent matches against AJ Styles and Seth Rollins, there was still a large portion of the WWE Universe that wasn’t really sold on Reigns as the WWE World Heavyweight Champion. For several months, it felt like the fans were getting behind Dean Ambrose as the title holder and that’s what led to Ambrose challenging Triple H for the championship at the special WWE Network event weeks before WrestleMania 32.

WWE was also starting to put the three most popular guys on the roster in a triple threat match for the WWE World Heavyweight Championship with a storyline where you look at Reigns as the face, Rollins as the heel and Ambrose as, well, unpredictable in what his motives are. It’s a big reason why the go-home edition of Raw before Money in the Bank was perfect.

However, having the three former Shield members at WWE Battleground feels a little rushed. That’s not to say it’s a bad main event, but more along the lines with the belief that a triple threat match involving Ambrose, Reigns and Rollins should be saved for the main event of WrestleMania next year. This has all the makings of the biggest match and it should be held for the biggest show of the year.
Additionally, Reigns being gone for a month will be a true test to see how the fans react to Ambrose being given the WWE World Heavyweight Championship. Are the ratings going to climb with someone that has become a fan favorite since the Shield split up?

It’s no secret that ratings are the biggest determining factor in whether someone is kept in the main event picture on television and television ratings have fallen below three million for the first time in several years while Reigns was the WWE World Heavyweight Champion. Consider Ambrose winning the Money in the Bank ladder match and cashing in successfully as a big test to see if Reigns was a factor or not.
With Reigns gone for a month, it will give Ambrose a proper test of seeing if he can be the main event star the fans feel he deserves to be. It is going to help that we will likely see Ambrose and Rollins face off for the belt and the chemistry between the Lunatic Fringe and the Architect is sure to be entertaining.

Besides, Reigns can take a break and have a chance to reflect and evolve from the time off. Everyone needs a break now and then and while it’s an unpaid suspension, Reigns can take some rest before going back to work next month.
