Roman Reigns Can Wrestle
Before his suspension, Roman Reigns was getting roasted by the WWE Universe with “You Can’t Wrestle” chants, here’s why they are wrong.
Roman Reigns has probably been the most polarizing character in the recent history of the WWE. When Seth Rollins turned on the shields Reigns was instantly catapulted into the main event as a top face. That run was quickly sidelined by injury and/or illness and upon his return fans rejected his immediate push back to the top of the card which only got worse over time.
The build up to this WrestleMania 32 with Roman Reigns as part of the main event saw the booing getting more intense, so much so that his ring entrance was changed from coming out of the crowd to out of the stage like everyone else. He also changed his catch phrase from “Believe That” to “I’m not a good guy, I’m not a bad guy, I’m The Guy!”. Which only intensified the boos for what is supposed to be WWE’s superhero top face.

After WrestleMania, a new chant became noticeable for Roman Reigns and one that fans are dead wrong about, “You Can’t Wrestle”. Ironically, this developed during what was probably Roman Reigns best series of pay per view matches with Triple H, AJ Styles, & Seth Rollins. While the booking was questionable in all of those matches, Roman Reigns put on a great show working with some of the best in the business.

On the Raw after Money In The Bank, just before his suspension was announced, the fans erupted with a “You Can’t Wrestle Chant” that Reigns went off script with in a very heel like move addressing the crowd by saying, “To all the dudes chanting that I can’t wrestle, calm down, relax, take a sip of your beer and shut your mouths.”
It is rare if not unheard of for a face to tell the audience to shut up. Even if the crowd is rejecting your character stepping out like that without a planned heel turn is very dangerous to the character. However, in this case, he was absolutely right in what he said and right to have said it as it surprisingly worked to quiet the crowd with that chant as they moved on to the promo.
The problem with Roman Reigns has never completely been his in ring work. There are far worse in ring technicians than Reigns that have been legends in the industry. Hulk Hogan, Goldberg, Kevin Nash, and the list could go on and on.
“To all the dudes chanting that I can’t wrestle, calm down, relax, take a sip of your beer and shut your mouths.”

The booking has been the main issue with Reigns, both in the way he was booked and how others were not. Had he not been escalated immediately to the main event by winning the 2015 Royal Rumble over Daniel Bryan I don’t think this would have happened. However, it is not fair to say that Reigns cannot wrestle. His matches with AJ Styles were very good and the WrestleMania main event was good as well. Also the trend of main event matches featuring multiple false finishes after a finishing maneuver has been hit has made things worse as it gives the appearance that Reigns is ridiculously indestructible. Still these are no reasons to chant “You Can’t Wrestle”.
When Roman Reigns returns from his suspension, hopefully, WWE uses that as a way to move his character towards a heel character. Hopefully, in turn, the WWE fans boo his character but don’t cross the line into the unfair “You Can’t Wrestle” chants. It is embarrassing, not to Reigns but to those making the chants.
