WWE Rumors: Vince McMahon is ‘Souring’ on Roman Reigns

facebooktwitterreddit

WWE rumors can be bizarre, but this one involving Roman Reigns and Vince McMahon is out there. Could it be true?

Since The Shield split up in 2014, Roman Reigns has been booked as a huge star for WWE. His push was accelerated in early 2015, winning the Royal Rumble and headlining WrestleMania 31. While the Big Dog would lose at the Show of Shows, he went on to win in the headlining match of WrestleMania 32.

In what was thought to be the start of a long world title run for Reigns, this did not turn out to be the case. He lost the belt after 10 weeks and was suspended for 30 days by WWE for violating the Wellness Policy. However, the company has treated the former Shield man like he hasn’t missed a beat on TV, consistently mentioning and even placing him in the main event of WWE Battleground for Dean Ambrose’s WWE Championship.

There be something else brewing, though, because according to Cageside Seats’ rumor roundup, Vince McMahon reportedly started to “sour” on Reigns before the failed Wellness test. The Chairman has also apparently been lobbied by others to push someone else as a top guy. This could be Seth Rollins or AJ Styles, both of whom Vince is very high on.

This is a very interesting rumor. Like any of them, there’s either something to this, or nothing at all. With the investment that WWE put into Reigns, it would be difficult to believe that McMahon is prepared to give up on this push. Maybe the results haven’t gone the way he has liked, however.

The crowd reaction has to be analyzed. They have booed Reigns for a few years, and based on the reaction he has received anytime he’s been name-dropped these past three weeks, it hasn’t been pretty. When he returns at Battleground, it will probably be worse. They aren’t accepting of Roman as the top guy and have no intention on changing their minds, for now.

Who’s fault this is can be put up for debate.

One side of the argument says that WWE hasn’t put Reigns in a good position as the top guy, or is booked too much to showcase his weaknesses.

The other side of this is the former football player hasn’t taken the ball and ran with his opportunity. He headlined the biggest WrestleMania in WWE’s history and put on a match that fans turn their heads at. The promo work needed out of an elite guy has also not been there, and while it has improved since June 2014, the progress has been slow. His speaking doesn’t come close to the likes of John Cena, Stone Cold Steve Austin, The Rock, and Hulk Hogan, WWE stars who are or were top guys.

As for the rumored replacements, Styles is 39-years-old, so how long he can be built around is unknown. His promo work has been better than expected, and his in-ring work has been as advertised. Rollins has been terrific since breaking up The Shield in 2014, and has shown he can carry a show. He has displayed mic skills that used to be below-average, but is arguably one of the best WWE has. The wrestling has always been there too.

If Vince McMahon is really souring on Roman Reigns, our first example of this will come on July 19, which is the date of the WWE Draft. How high could Reigns go? Could he fall? What about Battleground? Could he eat the pin?
