AJ Styles Should Be the Face of WWE SmackDown

With the WWE Draft in the books and the rosters set, AJ Styles needs to become the face of Smackdown going forward.

For the first time since 2002, WWE had a draft pitting every superstar on the roster as a free agent to be drafted to either RAW or Smackdown. Smackdown started off fast taking both Dean Ambrose and AJ Styles with their first two picks.

Ambrose who is the current WWE Champion was picked as the No. 1 Pick (second overall) by Smackdown Commissioner Shane McMahon and GM Daniel Bryan. The belief is that Ambrose will become the face of the brand.

However, Smackdown’s top guy should be the man who the brand chose with their second pick, “The Phenomenal” AJ Styles. Since coming to WWE in January, Styles has become one of the overall top performers in the company.

Styles has for the last few months been putting on the best matches in the company with a range of opponents. His matches with Chris Jericho, Roman Reigns and recently John Cena have been absolute show stealers.

WWE needs to reward Styles with making him the blue brand’s top dog. Originally the thought was Styles would be nothing more than an upper mid-carder. However, many feel that he is viewed as one of WWE’s most important stars.

Whether he is viewed as a hero or a villain AJ has been able to really make the most of his character. The feuds and battles he could have on Smackdown would be really fun to watch. Also, with Smackdown having a nucleus of young stars, having them work with AJ Styles can only strengthen the brand.

Ambrose was selected over Styles, simply because the former is currently the WWE Champion. The belief though is that Ambrose is most likely to drop the title to Seth Rollins in the triple threat match at Battleground (the match also features Roman Reigns). This allows the WWE Championship to be sole property of RAW, and thus would create an opportunity to create a new World Championship for Smackdown. With Styles most likely to continue his feud with John Cena after Battleground, it would be the perfect opportunity to make their feud determine who the first World Champion of Smackdown will be.

The two could culminate their feud with a final match at Summerslam to determine the World Champion, with AJ Styles winning. This would give him his first Championship reign in WWE, and would help ignite him as the face of Smackdown going forward.

Styles could then help carry the brand with him entering programs with the likes of Randy Orton and Ambrose. Smackdown needs to be different than RAW, and with Styles’ ring work and charisma he could help give Smackdown its own identity.

In such a short period, AJ Styles has shown that he is one of the best overall talents in WWE. With Smackdown needing an identity going forward I can’t think of a better person to lead the show than him.

His ring work, improved microphone skills and ability to put on a 5-star match with anyone he steps in the ring with are reasons why he should be the face of Smackdown. The future can be bright on Smackdown, but first, they need to have AJ Styles be the guy who leads the brand into the future.
