Cesaro Can Still Be a Top Star on WWE Raw

With all the attention surrounding Cesaro after his comments about the company, the WWE has a golden opportunity to establish Cesaro as a top star on Raw.

After being drafted to Monday Night Raw in the 6th round of the WWE Draft, Cesaro went off-script and legitimately voiced his complaints about the company in a live post draft interview on the WWE Network.

Cesaro expressed his displeasure with being selected late in the draft and criticized the company for having Raw focus more on the dynamic between Stephanie McMahon and General Manager Mick Foley, instead of the actual wrestling and superstars.

The Swiss superstar also took a few jabs at the company for not allowing him to speak as much as he’d like. He made it clear that he could speak perfect English, which is interesting because many seem to believe that Cesaro’s lack of mic skills has prevented him from being pushed as a top guy.

After Dave Meltzer of the Wrestling Observer confirmed that Cesaro’s interview was a shoot, many people expected Cesaro to be punished for his off-script comments about the company. However, it appears as though the WWE is playing along and using Cesaro’s interview as a part of an angle.

On the July 25th addition of Monday Night Raw, Stephanie McMahon addressed The Swiss Superman’s interview comments and gave him the opportunity to earn a match with Seth Rollins at SummerSlam for the new WWE Universal Championship.

While Cesaro did not win his Fatal 4-Way match to qualify, the company did acknowledge that they were not going to punish Cesaro for his comments. On the August 1st edition of Raw, General Manager Mick Foley scheduled a match between Cesaro and Sheamus, where the winner would be given a future championship match.

Cesaro managed to win the match and he will now get an opportunity to compete for a title, sometime in the near future. This is an opportunity that Cesaro has really needed for some time now and it could help the Swiss Superstar become a top guy on Raw.

Since returning from a shoulder injury the night after WrestleMania 32, Cesaro has struggled to find his place on the main event card. He failed to take the Intercontinental title from The Miz and was unsuccessful at winning the Money in the Bank ladder match earlier this year.

While Cesaro has picked up a few impressive wins since returning from injury, he really hasn’t been used properly. Cesaro is one of the most talented and experienced wrestlers on the main roster and yet, he’s only ever held two titles in the WWE.

The Swiss Superstar’s last title win was with Tyson Kidd over a year ago at Fastlane, where the duo won the tag team titles from The Usos. As a single’s competitor, Cesaro has not held a title since he won the United States Championship three years ago.

Although Cesaro had a decent run as the U.S. champion, it didn’t do much to elevate the Swiss superstar to main status. Cesaro is far too talented to be wasted as a mid-carder and the only thing that’s really holding him from being a top guy on Raw is the company’s booking.

Prior to beating Sheamus on the second episode of Raw since the brand split, Cesaro has been booked very poorly. He hasn’t been given a title match since June and has failed to get wins over other mid-carders like Kevin Owens, Chris Jericho, Rusev and Sami Zayn.

The best way to establish Cesaro as a top star on Raw is to give him some convincing wins over other top talent. For example, a win for Cesaro over Seth Rollins or Roman Reigns would likely give him a huge push in momentum.

Part of what works with Cesaro is the fact that the WWE does not have to worry about getting Cesaro over with the fans because he already has a lot of support in the form of the “Cesaro Section.” The Swiss superstar can also hold his own in the ring against anyone. The only thing holding back Cesaro is the WWE.
