Why Neville Shouldn’t Compete in WWE Raw’s Cruiserweight Division
By Tom Thomas
Neville is an incredible athlete in the ring with one of the most impressive finishing moves. What are his best options apart from the upcoming Cruiserweight division?
Despite returning to in-ring action with solid performances against the Dudleys and Chris Jericho, Neville still searches for a solid spot in mid-card. It’s a wise idea to have him feature in the Cruiserweight division. However, someone as gifted as Neville should not limit themselves to this group alone. The former NXT champion has done everything right ever since his call-up to the main roster. He has put in consistent performance against all opponents, and has shown us he can hang in the ring with some of the best talent on the main roster. Neville has also gained relative support from the crowd.
Despite all his athleticism and charisma, the English superstar is yet to capture gold on the main roster. The only time he was relevant in the recent times was when he once confronted Kevin Owens during a backstage segment on Raw.
With the Cruiserweight division coming to RAW, the creative would be itchy to place Neville as a major attraction there. While it is true that this will give him some much-needed direction and purpose, Neville and his finisher – the red arrow deserves to be featured more prominently on RAW. Here is a look at few other options for the former NXT champion.
Tag Team Division
During the pre-show match for Summerslam, we saw the team of Neville and Sami Zayn take on the Dudley boys successfully. Neither of these incredible performers has any direction or momentum at the moment. Why not put them together as a tag team, playing up their history and friendship from NXT? They can make ideal gutsy baby faces to feud with The Club once the New Day – Club feud is over (hopefully by Clash of Champions).

Neville has shown us time and again during his NXT reign that he can hang in with the best and hold on to an individual title without any problems. If the WWE has indeed sacked the Reigns – Rusev feud, Neville will make an excellent choice to face Rusev. He is clearly the underdog here. But that does not mean it’s a pure David Vs Goliath scenario. The fans should be more than happy to cheer him as he battles Rusev valiantly over a number of matches and eventually claiming the prestigious title.
Neville Shouldn’t Be Typecast as a Cruiserweight Performer
The answer is simple. He is much more than that. Neville does not fit the prototypical image of a WWE champion, unlike Roman Reigns. But that’s the beauty of it. Fans can easily relate to his struggle to reach the top of the mountain one day like Daniel Bryan. The only thing Neville lacks is mic skills. But he is still a decent talker. NXT believed in him. Raw should do the same too.

Creative will continue to have him featured as an underdog in every fight and title defence. We already have one true underdog on the roster – Sami Zayn. Neville should be a fighting champion who never backs down from any challenge – one who will never consider himself as an underdog. That’s the direction creative should take with the talented English high flyer.
