WWE Fastlane 2017: Bayley Should Drop the Women’s Title at PPV

Bayley defeated Charlotte Flair to win her first-ever WWE Raw Women’s Championship; but with WrestleMania around the corner, the WWE cannot afford to have her walking into the Showcase of the Immortals as the champion.

A day after Bray Wyatt became the new WWE World Heavyweight Champion, and Naomi became the new Smackdown Women’s Champion, Bayley pulled off the upset by defeating Charlotte for the WWE Raw Women’s title. This may be a feel-good story to some, but for most of us, it appears that the WWE is playing ‘musical chairs’ with their titles.

The prestige of becoming a champion seems to come at ease. While Bayley deserves to be a champion of sorts, the feeling of most was that it would have taken place at WrestleMania 33 rather than a Monday Night Raw that featured the return of Gillberg and perhaps the most entertaining segment in quite some time, the ‘Festival of Friendship’ between Chris Jericho and Kevin Owens.

Rather than play the role of a cynic, it’s best to look at what the WWE has in store for the Raw Women’s title from here on out.  Bayley represents the common wrestling fan who loves this industry so much that she ‘beat the odds’ and fulfilled the ultimate dream of her childhood by hoisting the gold live on national television; and while we can all cheer for someone who portrays the role of the ultimate underdog, reality has to set in that Bayley must lose the title at WWE Fastlane.

If you are going into your biggest pay per view of the year, and you want the division to supersede some of the men’s division such as the Cruiserweight and United States title division then Bayley must face Charlotte at WWE Fastlane and Charlotte has to go on and win the title heading into WrestleMania.

The rumored match at this year’s WrestleMania for the Raw Women’s title is Nia Jax vs Sasha Banks vs Bayley vs Charlotte. If Bayley goes in as a champion but ends up losing the title at WrestleMania then where would that leave Bayley to go afterward? The ultimate feel-good story would be to have Bayley win at Mania’ and turn Sasha Banks heel the next night on Raw setting up a classic feud between the two women that could gear them towards SummerSlam.

More from Raw

If anyone remembers Bayley vs Sasha Banks on an NXT card then you know that this match deserves to headline a major pay per view. A heel Sasha Banks and Bayley should be the main event of SummerSlam this year, and all signs are pointing in that direction. Charlotte does not need to hold a title, she is a superstar without it, but at this point, Bayley needs to be a champion, but not before WrestleMania.

This year’s SummerSlam will take place in Brooklyn, New York, which is the same city that bolstered the careers of both women after their match of the year performance at NXT Takeover: Respect when the two battled in an Ironman Match.

Look for a repeat performance with the same possible stipulation as long as the cards are played right and Bayley loses her title at WWE Fastlane.

Regardless of the outcome, Bayley becoming WWE Raw Women’s Champion is short-lived, but well deserved all at the same time.
