A controversial finish highlighted Tuesday’s episode of WWE SmackDown, as the seemingly planned finish to the battle royal didn’t work with AJ Styles and Luke Harper.

AJ Styles and Luke Harper have been on a wild ride for the past month. From title opportunities for Styles, to surging popularity for Harper, they are red-hot right now and at the right time heading into WrestleMania season. They would look to play their luck on Tuesday night.

On the February 14 episode of WWE SmackDown Live, Bray Wyatt successfully retain the WWE Championship over John Cena and AJ Styles. However, Randy Orton — the 2017 Royal Rumble match winner — declined his title opportunity at WrestleMania, saying he wouldn’t want to face his master. This led to Daniel Bryan announcing a battle royal for SmackDown on February 21, with the winner facing Wyatt on April 2.

This battle royal would see Dean Ambrose, John Cena, Baron Corbin, Apollo Crews, Luke Harper, Kalisto, The Miz, Mojo Rawley, AJ Styles, and Dolph Ziggler all compete for his opportunity. But who would walk out a winner?

The final two would see Harper and Styles go head-to-head. They battled for a few minutes, until things went to the apron. This saw Harper go to suplex Styles out of the ring, with the latter clearly hitting the ground first. However, it seems the idea here was supposed to be the two of them landing on the floor at the same time. Referees arguing and Styles and Harper bickering made this clear.
