WWE WrestleMania 33: Daniel Bryan Should Be Special Guest Referee for Mixed Tag Match

With the mixed tag team match of John Cena and Nikki Bella vs. The Miz and Maryse, it would be only fitting for Daniel Bryan to be at WrestleMania 33 as the Special Guest Referee.

After Daniel Bryan retired early last year due to concussion-like syndromes at the age of 34, it appeared that the former WWE World Heavyweight Champion had no place within the company any longer.

Thanks to the brand-split, however, Daniel Bryan has received new life in the WWE as both SmackDown Live General Manager and co-host of the popular WWE Network series, Talking Smack.

All signs point to Bryan being unable to ever perform in a WWE ring due to its protocol with concussions and CTE that link the two together; however, with WrestleMania 33 around the corner, it makes all the sense in the world to insert Daniel Bryan in the ring again at a WrestleMania — only this time as a Special Guest Referee.

The pairing is obvious: Daniel Bryan is the brother-in-law of Nikki Bella, and if John Cena ends up marrying Nikki then Daniel will be John Cena’s brother-in-law as well. In the case of The Miz, both Bryan and Miz have had a major rivalry of sorts since August of 2016 after Bryan called Miz a ‘coward’ on the WWE Network show, Talking Smack while the Miz responded in the most brutal way possible by reminding him that he is still competing while Bryan is retired due to his in-ring style.

Maryse and Nikki Bella have recently been feuding due to Nikki accidently knocking Maryse out on a recent episode of WWE SmackDown Live and Maryse costing Nikki Bella a chance to defeat Natalya by hitting her with a pipe, allowing Natalya to go for the pin.

More from WrestleMania

All five are featured on the hit E! show Total Divas this season, which has seen its highest ratings in quite some time. If Daniel Bryan can no longer compete in the ring in a dream match of sorts against The Miz, then give him the opportunity to be in the ring and be featured in a high profile match on the WrestleMania 33 card as a Special Guest Referee.

The Miz and John Cena will be featured again on a WrestleMania card — their first since competing in the main event of WrestleMania 27 for the WWE World Heavyweight Championship as The Miz came out victorious on the same event that featured The Rock.

On the most recent episode of WWE SmackDown Live, The Miz began mocking Daniel Bryan by doing the Yes! chant in front of the sellout crowd, and even added Bryan’s famous kicks to continue his mockery of the future Hall of Famer. Fans were hoping that the continued on-screen rivalry between Bryan and Miz would escalate into a match at the Show of Shows, but with the rumored mixed tag match at Mania, the best case scenario for fans would be to see Daniel Bryan wearing zebra stripes, which would be better than nothing for all of us.

Shawn Michaels announced his retirement after losing to The Undertaker at WrestleMania 26 in a ‘Career vs Streak’ match. Two years later, HBK returned at WrestleMania 28 as a Special Guest Referee in a Hell in a Cell match between Triple H and The Undertaker. It was a memorable match, which also ‘felt’ as though Shawn was in there wrestling, even though he was a referee.

If this would be Daniel Bryan’s ‘Swan Song’ at WrestleMania, then allow him to go out in the middle of the ring as a Special Guest Referee, and perhaps retaliating against The Miz towards the end of the match by giving him a Yes! kick of his own.
