Floyd Mayweather vs. Conor McGregor: What If WWE Hosted the Fight?

Let’s take a look at the impossible-but-hypothetical situation of WWE hosting a Floyd Mayweather vs. Conor McGregor fight.

Floyd Mayweather shook the fighting world when he announced his intention of unretiring just to face UFC star, Conor McGregor. It doesn’t guarantee that the long-awaited superfight is happening, but it’s one small step closer. Mayweather said he wants this to happen in June.

If Mayweather vs. McGregor happens, it would potentially be in a boxing ring, something the latter man hasn’t done before on an amateur or pro level (h/t Yahoo!). So who knows if he could hold up in a fight with Money.

Superstars of the boxing and MMA world colliding never happens, which would make this fight explode with green dollar signs for Mayweather and McGregor. All eyes would be on it from all angles.

So how does this relate to WWE? Well, it doesn’t. But what if these two stepped into a wrestling ring instead of one for boxing or the octagon? It obviously won’t happen, but let’s take a look at the hypothetical situation.

McGregor vs. Mayweather inside a wrestling ring? That would be a spectacle in itself. iPhones will be flashing, millions would be tuned in and, as noted, there would be money flying around all over the place. Images could be grabbed of just these two going face-to-face in the middle of the ring.

More from WWE

The fun part of this hypothetical wrestling match is it, as Jim Ross would call it, be a slobberknocker. Mayweather would throw his sharp jabs at McGregor, who can counter with his wrestling ability. He trained in it for his MMA fights, some of which can be seen here before his UFC 205 bout.

Basically, this would be a clash of styles. If it’s a wrestling match, however, you’d have to give the edge to McGregor, right? Experience is on his side, even though Mayweather did “knock out” Big Show at WrestleMania 24. That wasn’t much of an in-ring showing for the boxing legend, as he got bullied around by the World’s Largest Athlete and mustered in some right hands and a chokehold. However, there wouldn’t be the distinct size advantage that there was in 2008.

If we’re looking for a match type, a singles bout may work best. Just letting these two go head-to-head and battle it out would be fun enough. What about other options, though?

Street Fight

This is the basic non-singles match that they could do here. Foreign objects would be used all over the place here, even with one potentially putting the other through a table.

First Blood

Remember the First Blood matches? These aren’t a thing anymore in WWE since it’s a PG program, but they had a run in the late 1990’s and early 2000’s. If McGregor and Mayweather had this match type, then this may last for maybe two or three minutes, especially with the nature of some of the MMA fights seen.

Hell in a Cell

Mayweather vs. McGregor inside Hell in a Cell? Someone is bound to get cut open, even if it’s unintentional. The Irishman, if motivated enough, could sling his opponent straight into the dangerous steel, using the viciousness he displays inside the octagon. Just don’t get these two on top of the cell!

There’s more of a chance of Sting vs. Undertaker at WrestleMania happening than Conor McGregor vs. Floyd Mayweather in a WWE ring. It’s something you’d have to go to WWE 2K17 for, manually create two Superstars and let them battle. Who would actually win, though?
