5. There is Only One Brock Lesnar

A common critique of WWE over the past few years has been their failure to create top-level stars. There have been a handful of exceptions as of late, however many struggle to reach the popularity of icons such as The Rock, Steve Austin, and even John Cena. On RAW, there is a very thin list of superstars who could go toe to toe with Goldberg. One of those men is Braun Strowman, and he’s fresh off his first loss in the company. Another (although unpopular) choice is Roman Reigns, who is currently entering into a feud with The Undertaker.

That leaves Brock Lesnar as the only viable contender to Goldberg’s Universal Championship. Say what you will about part-time stars, but they’re the ones who draw in the casual fans. WrestleMania season is the most crucial time for that demographic to return, hence the featuring of two of the best powerhouses in WWE history. At the end of the day, this match is going to bring in a ton of revenue for the company, so it’s a smart move business wise.

Had any other superstar stepped up to the challenge, fans would’ve expected a match similar to what we saw at Fastlane. The problem of having someone like Lesnar lose to Goldberg is that since the Beast was the most dominant man on the roster, everyone else immediately looks inferior. What happened to Kevin Owens was a result of how WWE handled Goldberg’s return match. If the contest at Survivor Series had been more competitive, Owens could’ve been booked as a more resilient champion. Goldberg may be experiencing an unbelievable run at the moment, but the Beast Incarnate will end his superhuman presence at WrestleMania.
