WWE Women’s Tournament Announced for Summer of 2017
The WWE Women’s Tournament will be taking place this summer on the WWE Network.
WWE had great success with the Cruiserweight Classic in the summer of 2016. This saw 32 wrestlers that were 205 pounds or less compete for the WWE Cruiserweight Championship. It made for a fun 10-week event, culminating with a two-hour live special. TJ Perkins ended up defeating Gran Metalik for not only the Cruiserweight Classic trophy, but the new WWE Cruiserweight Championship.
Well, WWE will go back to this tournament idea for a second consecutive year, but for a different group of wrestlers. They announced a WWE Women’s Tournament for this summer.
Triple H commented on the announcement via Twitter. He indicated 32 competitors from 17 countries will take part.
This is a fantastic development for not only WWE, but women’s wrestling. We’ll get to see a rising division of talent take center stage for an unknown amount of time and make a name for themselves. They’ll have a tough act to follow after the Cruiserweight Classic, but the women involved should be able to step up and provide us with a groundbreaking event.
As for who could be involved, might WWE use some of their own women’s wrestlers? Maybe, but not a lot of them, as they only had Rich Swann, Johnny Gargano and Tommaso Ciampa compete in the Cruiserweight Classic — all three of whom were signed to WWE deals or consistently appeared on NXT. The rest were talents signed from outside the company.
However, if WWE includes just a handful of their own competitors, maybe we’ll get to see someone like Kimber Lee or Ruby Riot get a spot. Riot recently debuted on NXT and will compete at NXT TakeOver: Orlando in an eight-person tag team match.
