WWE SummerSlam 2017: Jason Jordan Should Not Win Intercontinental Title Yet

The Miz is back as WWE’s Intercontinental Champion, and his “Miztourage” has helped make the title feel exciting again. However, Kurt Angle’s son, Jason Jordan, looms as a threat to the Miz’s latest reign.

It’s sink-or-swim time for Jason Jordan, who is in the early stages of what will presumably be a heavy push. Some fans were surprised that Jordan was named Kurt Angle’s illegitimate son, because it seemed like there would be a more natural link between Angle and Jordan’s American Alpha partner Chad Gable. Both were Olympic wrestlers, and Gable uses pretty much all of Angle’s moves. However, it is Jordan who is in a position to benefit from being associated with one of the greatest wrestlers in WWE history, and he’s already been given an opportunity to chase after The Miz’s Intercontinental Championship.

On the July 24, episode of Monday Night Raw, Jordan cut a promo about how it feels to be Angle’s son, prior to his Raw debut match against Curt Hawkins. This promo was quite honestly one of the worst of the year. It looked completely inauthentic, and it was profoundly uninteresting. Jordan’s “lost in the clouds” look seemed contrived, and it was a reminder that Jordan never got “over” as a performer on his own. In fact, he was floundering before Gable formed a tag team with him.

But a week later, Jordan shined on “Miz TV”. Leave it to The Miz to get any babyface over. Jordan came across as believable, and he even snuck in a couple of good barbs on the mic. Of course, Jordan is at his best in the ring, and his belly-to-back suplex on “The Awesome One” to close out the segment was a thing of beauty.

Although it hasn’t been officially announced, it’s safe to predict a match between Jordan and The Miz at SummerSlam 2017. Seth Rollins and Dean Ambrose, who had previously been feuding with “The Miztourage”, have now moved on to a rivalry with Sheamus and Cesaro, leaving The Miz’s future opponent vacant.

That vacancy will be filled by Jordan, and it’s obvious that WWE wants him to shoot for one of their titles. More importantly, it is essentially inevitable that he will win the Intercontinental Championship as part of this push. Jordan has the wrestling skills that can entertain audiences, he has “the look” that Vince McMahon covets, and his Miz TV segment showed that he can carry himself like a prototypical babyface.

Jordan’s triumph should not come at SummerSlam, nor should it come at any point in the near future. Although rivalries should not be dragged out for too long, the WWE should not pull the trigger on putting the title around Jordan’s waist too quickly. The best part about feuding with The Miz is being part of a slow burn storyline. The Miz tears down babyfaces verbally, cheats to win, and gets the babyface over by making them look far superior in the ring. After several frustrating close calls, the babyface finally gets their crowning moment at a Pay Per View, and, if all goes well, you have a new star on your hands.

Last year, The Miz was a part of the greatest storyline rivalry in WWE with Dolph Ziggler, and that’s essentially the recipe they followed. With Jordan, the circumstances are different. Unlike Ziggler, Jordan isn’t an experienced mic worker, and he’s also never been “over” as a single’s competitor. This means the stakes are higher for Jordan, since this might be his only chance to become a true superstar in the company. Additionally, it means that more steps need to be taken in order to build up Jordan.

As of right now, “The Miztourage” is one of the best things in WWE programming right now. The Miz’s promos continue to be self-aggrandizing, and both Curtis Axel and Bo Dallas finally feel relevant. Their relevancy and The Miz’s title reign should continue to last, but, as with everything in wrestling, the heel must be sacrificed to the babyface at some point.

Ideally, Jordan would come close to winning on multiple occasions at SummerSlam, only to be thwarted by members of “The Miztourage”, Maryse, or some other shady tactics before ultimately losing. Jordan could then cut backstage promos with Kurt, asking the WWE Hall of Famer for advice, as well as showcased his frustrations with The Miz’s nefarious ways. We could then see The Miz berate Jordan on Raw, throw in some more brawls, and get some more wonky finishes, and give Jordan some more time to cut impassioned promos.

If the WWE plays their cards right, they could build this feud up for a couple of months before Jordan finally breaks out with an Intercontinental Championship victory in the first crowning moment of his victory.

I have my doubts about Jordan when it comes to his full potential in the WWE, because his mic skills and acting chops have been quite awful to this point in his career. However, we’ve seen countless superstars improve in this respect, and Jordan already showed signs of improvement last week on Miz TV. Of course, Jordan’s talent inside the ring cannot be denied, and a well-worked, slow-burn feud with The Miz could also help him become even better at playing the psychology of the babyface role as a single’s competitor.
