The Smackdown Live Tag Team Division

Highlights of the division

The Usos and the New Day tore the house down in the match of the night on SmackDown Live. The issue has nothing to do with their chemistry in or outside of the ring, it’s been how long the rivalry has lasted. Since May, both teams have wrestled each other numerous times and traded the titles three times. There haven’t been any conclusion to this feud and with the Usos losing their gold, this rivalry still continues. It wouldn’t be surprising if the Usos use their rematch clause for the gold inside Hell in a Cell next month. That would be the perfect way to end this run both teams have been on, it should honestly be main-eventing the pay per view.

The team of Chad Gable and Shelton Benjamin moved up one spot this week in the rankings. Their win over the Hype Bros will move them one step closer to a shot at the SmackDown Live Tag Team Championships. There still haven’t been any backstage segments or mic time for this team to make any character progressions. That’s the key to make sure that this team doesn’t suffer the same fate that American Alpha did last year to SmackDown Live. The fans want to be invested in the performer on an entertainment level. You can be a skilled wrestler, but if you have no persona to amplify your ring work, nobody will care about you. Ask Dolph Ziggler about that.

Meanwhile, for the rest of the division.

Breezango made an appearance on 205 Live this week and disrupted Drew Gulak’s powerpoint presentation. It was a good change of pace for the Fashion Police that they went to another show to do their comedy bit. But the fact remains, their comedy sketches have no goal in sight. First it was mostly centred around tag teams breaking fashion laws and then it was the mystery of attackers sabotaging their offices. There needs to be more clarity on what type of direction this team needs to be heading. They are a few wins away from being the top contenders for the tag titles, but the question is—are they being booked to be comedy relief or credible contenders?

Let’s see the rankings for the division this week.
