Hey, Wrestling Fans, Stop Being Bigots And Body-Shaming Women Wrestlers
Women wrestlers like Piper Niven do what they do because they love it. They love walking through that curtain, and hearing the crowd cheer/boo, and entertaining those people.
Recently while scrolling through Twitter, I saw a tweet, (which I will not include in this post because I don’t want to give the person who posted it anymore fame) it was a screenshot of a Facebook page, in which someone posted a photo of Mae Young Classic participant Piper Niven body shaming her for being overweight.
While I’m sure she is used to things like this, and probably didn’t even see the post, it instantly struck a nerve with me. She put on some of the best matches in the tournament, and even if she hadn’t no one deserves to be treated like this. She was impressive in the MYC.
Yes, Niven is a bigger woman, but that doesn’t matter. Women don’t have to be supermodels to be good at wrestling. In fact, WWE had a program where they looked for supermodels to compete in the WWE called the ‘Divas Search.’ While it did give us a few decent wrestlers, it mostly gave us ‘eye candy.’ A period I’m glad WWE has moved on from has moved into bringing women in, no matter their size, who can actually wrestle and put on a great match. Not women who go out there for three minutes and end their matches in a roll up.

Now we have women who can actually put on great matches, and judging from the MYC Pipe Niven is definitely one of these women.
It’s also really annoying to see and hear about male fans at wrestling events that tell women they shouldn’t be there. It’s stupid. Wrestling, just like any other sport, isn’t just there for men to enjoy.
It’s 2017, and will soon be 2018; I would have hoped that by now that we as a species would be passed this kind of Neandrathal like behavior. Where men are superior, and women should look how you think they should, it’s asinine.
Wrestling, especially women’s wrestling, is at its best right now, and only getting better. Comments like this shouldn’t be made, under any circumstances.
There’s a difference between not liking someone, and saying something about them because their character calls for it, and just saying something like this just because you don’t agree with the way they look. (I have bad news for you buddy, regardless of what you think, the world doesn’t revolve around you. And your opinion isn’t that valued or warranted.)
If they play a ‘bad guy’ in the ring, then it’s different to say you don’t like them. But even they don’t deserve to be shamed, or spoken ill of. They are just doing their job, and apparently doing it well if you don’t like them.

At least to see the normal, human being, part of that Facebook fans on that fan page stood up for Piper. Which was nice to see.
