WWE SmackDown Top 5 Segments: Sami Zayn Eviscerates Daniel Bryan
By Warren Hayes
Number 5: The Bludgeon Brothers Vignette
Yes. Yes, everyone, I’m being completely serious. This is one of the best segments from last night’s episode of WWE SmackDown Live. Matter of fact, it was great. How great was it? Unintentionally great. This segment worked because it worked on levels it wasn’t supposed to work on.
Obviously, the intention was to have a vignette showing off how foreboding and intimidating the Bludgeon Brothers are. What we got instead was so cheesy and badly acted I couldn’t help but love it.
Remember how the vignette started? Two figures are standing immobile. They’re dressed in some kind of robe that looks like… bark? What are they? Are they trees? They kind of look like trees. Then they turn around and you realize they’re not trees, they’re angry druids in choice LARP outfits. I snickered.
But the segment peaked when Luke Harper opened his mouth to deliver his lines. What was likely supposed to be enunciated in a menacing tone ended up sounding hilariously dopey. Not to mention Erick Rowan’s syllable-for-syllable over-articulation of the word “futility” had me in stitches. Then they proceeded to… smash… the ground(?) with their LARP war hammers and I applauded. That was amazingly hilarious.
Don’t get me wrong, this isn’t an endorsement. I don’t know what creative is planning with this gimmick. I mean, if they wanted to return Harper and Rowan to being “dark” characters, they could’ve just reformed the Wyatt Family. Would have been super over, too. This here, though, is just too corny.
But then again, whatever it takes to get Luke Harper back to wrestling on TV, I’m essentially okay with that.
