5. Sin Cara Becomes #1 Contender To Baron Corbin – Smackdown Live
So let’s go ahead and get Smackdown Live’s worst moment of the week out of the way first. And to be honest, it wasn’t really all that bad. Disappointing would be a better word for it. Coming off of the two biggest wins of his career against AJ Styles and Tye Dillinger in a United Stated title winning performance at Hell In A Cell, and then a clean rematch win over “The Phenomenal One”, Baron Corbin looked like he was headed for some big things. However, on Tuesday night he took on Sin Cara and in just 80 seconds and a count-out win for the luchador later, and we have a new #1 contender to Corbin’s U.S. title.
There is nothing wrong with Sin Cara getting this opportunity. He’s a very good worker and underrated entertainer but it was the manner in which he attained this status that leaves much to be desired. For Corbin, dethroning one of the greatest wrestlers in the history of the business in Styles should be the push he needs to eventually make the next step when his U.S. title reign eventually ends. However, the booking team is doing he and his future a disservice by anointing his next contender in such a weak manner. There were a number of different avenues the company could’ve gone down to make Sin Cara look like a legitimate threat. But instead he just looks like a guy thrown in there for Corbin to make an example of.
And is Sin Cara really the best option here? Again, solid performer, but with the blue brand currently housing Shinsuke Nakamura and Randy Orton who have essentially zero direction right now, maybe Sin Cara’s not the best choice. Corbin has a bright future ahead of him, no doubt, but if his direction continues to be that of a guy defending against low to mid-card talent, his push will stall before it ever really starts.
