13. Backlash

One of the historically longest-running pay-per-views in the WWE has been Backlash.  And despite the event taking a few years off prior to 2016, it’s back in the fold again for the SmackDown brand.

Backlash 2017 was centered around the unexpected WWE Championship opportunity for Jinder Mahal against Randy Orton.  But the event also featured the main roster debut of Shinsuke Nakamura who had a solid battle with Dolph Ziggler in the event’s opening match.

Another match that really stood out was Kevin Owens vs. AJ Styles with the United States Championship on the line.  This was arguably the match of the night at Backlash 2017 and was one of several pay-per-view matches Owens and Styles would have in the months that followed.

However, too many matches just fell short such as Sami Zayn vs. Baron Corbin, Erick Rowan vs. Luke Harper, and the WWE Championship match between Orton and Mahal.  Maybe the result of that match turned fans off more than anything with Mahal shockingly defeating The Viper to win his first WWE Championship in what would become a six-month title reign that garnered a lot of criticism from the WWE universe.

Backlash 2017 didn’t feature anything bad, but it didn’t feature much that would be considered truly good either.
