WWE: Stephanie McMahon On Breaking Kayfabe For Royal Rumble Announcement
By Harry Austen
A month ago, Stephanie McMahon made a monumental announcement on Raw, revealing that the women of WWE would compete (for the first time ever) in a Royal Rumble match.
The announcement was newsworthy for many reasons, but one that got wrestling fans talking (no surprise there) was Stephanie McMahon and the female WWE Superstars breaking kayfabe.
Stephanie is known to switch between heel and face characteristics, however, the female superstars aren’t – which made the announcement, and especially the reactions, all the more surprising.
It should come as no surprise then that the women surrounding McMahon actually had no idea what Stephanie was going to announce. The women were told that the ‘Billionaire Princess’ was going to be on Raw to announce something, however none were informed of the historic addition to the Royal Rumble card.

When talking to The Mirror, McMahon said this, regarding the character break:
"“We were chastised by some fans because we broke character and I told the women earlier in the day – they knew I was coming out but they didn’t know what I was going to say – I told them react naturally, don’t feel like you have to be in character, it’s okay for you to react however you want to react, to whatever I’m going to say. We all broke character that night. We had this very real moment with each other and with the audience, because again, our audience is such a huge part of making this happen.”"
Usually I’m dead against segments being unrealistic in wrestling, but you can’t deny McMahon did it for the right reasons.

The segment will not only be rewatched next Sunday night at the Rumble, but it’ll be rewatched and replayed countless times from this point onwards, especially for upcoming Royal Rumble events featuring a women’s match. And to have a genuine reaction used as the start of something so impactful, you can’t fault it.
