WWE WrestleMania 34: Is Roman Reigns vs. Brock Lesnar Too Predictable?

facebooktwitterreddit

With WrestleMania 34 a little over than a month away, Raw keeps fans guessing what’s in store for their main event.

For some time now, rumor has it that there were plans to have Roman Reigns vs. Brock Lesnar at WrestleMania 34, the rematch from three years prior.  If you remember, during that matchup, Seth Rollins cashed in his Money in the Bank contract and pinned Reigns to win the WWE Championship.  In fact, much too contrary, Roman Reigns has teased those very rumors on this week’s Raw.

Ultimately, that was a good setup for Rollins to interrupt Reigns with his entrance followed with a good start up to the grueling gauntlet match.  Reigns and Rollins have great chemistry together whether they are friends or foes, but the surprise here was Rollins being able to pin The Big Dog in a shocking move.  From the opening, it seemed like a full circle moment until the pinfall was counted.

Rollins’ outstanding performance may throw a wrench in those plans, as he currently isn’t involved in any storylines since losing the Raw Tag Team Championships to The Bar.  With Jason Jordan out due to injury, what is next for him?  That is a question that will be addressed as WrestleMania comes closer.  Rollins pretty much rested his case on Monday that he deserves to be in the Raw Mania event.

When Reigns was speaking Monday on how he knew he could’ve beaten Lesnar, I couldn’t help but to think of Leah from Twilight: Eclipse.  She echoed the same sentiment that Reigns did, that she could have taken out the lone vampire from the army that came to destroy the Cullens.  So when it comes to the idea that we could possibly see Reigns versus Lesnar part two, would it really sell fans on the fact that Reigns can overcome the Beast Incarnate?  Especially after a big loss before the Elimination Chamber, the momentum certainly isn’t in his favor.

That is likely what the storyline is going to be at WrestleMania if in fact this match takes place.  There is no Money in the Bank that can be cashed in, which leaves fans with the impression that there is a score to settle between the two men.  Reigns has improved since 2015, and there is no doubt that he is an even better competitor today.  With three Championship reigns under his belt in addition to a United States and Intercontinental Championship reigns, his stats are adding up.

While that is great for Reigns, it’s pretty much the same story that the company always faces.  Fans will not want to see this match, because they already know the rumors and reports.  Also, this will be Reigns’ fourth WrestleMania main event should the scenario come to fruition.

In essence, Reigns versus Lesnar is predictable at best.  Of course it is WrestleMania worthy but it’s a hard sell considering it has been done before, and the fact that Rollins and even Finn Balor are looking to capitalize on their momentum.  Let’s throw Braun Strowman in this equation too considering his rampage lately.  But if this is what is written in stone for New Orleans, WWE has so much work to do in efforts to sell their Raw main event.

On the flip side, what could be in the cards for Rollins, who again, put on an incredible performance on Raw?  Or Balor, who had a short reunion with his good brothers in The Club.  He has to put in more effort in order to get a rematch that he never received.  Strowman continues to grow into a bigger main event star; all he needs is a big WrestleMania match to solidify his monster push.  Certainly Strowman has had his chances against Lesnar, however his case to conquer the Beast is far more interesting than Reigns’.  Reigns isn’t destroying Raw’s sets or causing massive amounts of destruction – Strowman is someone fans definitely want to see carry the Universal Championship soon.

WWE will more than likely book themselves into a corner, creating another hard sell with the rumors that Lesnar will be going back to the UFC.  If Lesnar does lose, then the winner has to have a lot of momentum behind them en route to Mania.  The only one who even comes close to having that is Strowman, but as WWE has proven time and time again, they will do what they want despite what has already been done.  Reigns has the potential to do what Strowman does, but the damage has been done with how he could have been presented.  With the rematch, Reigns would have to show up and be bigger and badder than ever.  It seems like an impossible solution to make this revisited feud successful.  There’s no happy medium, and the story direction of both men just doesn’t add up.
