WWE WrestleMania 34: Who’s The Best Opponent For John Cena?
One of the greatest superstars in WWE history has been in an intriguing character development as of late in his attempt to find an opponent at WWE WrestleMania 34.
John Cena has carved out a WWE legacy that not many have ever had, but his WWE WrestleMania 34 plans are still up in the air with just over one month until the show of shows. And as of late, the rumor mills have been running wild regarding Cena’s possible WrestleMania opponents.
Big Match John failed to win the Royal Rumble match and he failed to win the Elimination Chamber match, but his WrestleMania plans are still highly intriguing and the unknown surrounding his WrestleMania picture have led to many differing opinions.
It’s been rumored for a while that Cena will face The Undertaker at WrestleMania 34. This is a match that many fans have wanted to see at WrestleMania for years, but is it too late? It’s no secret that Taker hasn’t been himself over his past few WrestleMania matches with injury and father time catching up with him.
It’s easy to question if this would-be match will turn out positively or not, but despite it coming probably a decade later than it needed to come, seeing Cena vs. Taker at WrestleMania on the card would be a big enough deal. However, this isn’t Cena’s only possibility at the granddaddy of them all.
As of late, rumor mills have taken a surprising turn regarding Cena’s potential WrestleMania 34 plans. It’s now being rumored that Cena will indeed take on a WWE legend, but instead of that legend being The Undertaker, it will be Rey Mysterio. Mysterio made a shocking return in the Royal Rumble match, but hasn’t been seen on WWE TV since.
It was also reported that Mysterio was backstage on the most recent edition of SmackDown in his hometown of San Diego, California, fueling more speculation that he will take on Cena at WrestleMania 34. The WWE and Mysterio are reportedly working on a new deal that would include a WrestleMania 34 match.
There are other outside possibilities for Cena at WrestleMania, especially given how he is in the WWE Championship match at Fastlane next Sunday. But it seems like his opponent will be either The Undertaker or Mysterio at this point barring any last-minute changes. This begs the question, which opponent would be better for Big Match John?
Seeing Cena vs. Taker on a WrestleMania card immediately pits two of the longest-running and greatest WWE superstars of all-time in a huge match. However, as previously mentioned, Taker’s health and ability to perform at a high level has been in serious question over the past few years.
Father time is undefeated, so it would be hard to produce a classic WrestleMania match between these two right now given the circumstances. But if any two can pull it off, it might just be Cena and Taker who would both undoubtedly leave everything they have in the ring.
Mysterio, however, is in a much better physical condition to perform at a high level at WrestleMania 34 compared to The Undertaker, who will be 53 once WrestleMania 34 arrives. The 43-year-old, master of the 619 has been active on the indies scene in recent years and looked to be in top physical condition during his Royal Rumble appearance.

This match would lack some of the hype a Cena vs. Taker match would provide, even in 2018, but it would likely result in a better overall match in terms of just in-ring action. Not to mention, Cena and Mysterio have rarely crossed paths in the WWE with their last match coming in the summer of 2011.
To sum things up, it’s totally subjective as to which opponent would be the best for Cena. If you’re looking for a huge name vs. huge name match between two all-time legends and one legend who is the most synonymous name in WrestleMania history, you would probably prefer seeing The Undertaker as Cena’s opponent.
But if you’re looking to see the best possible match for Cena while also seeing another WWE legend who’s still in outstanding in-ring shape, you would probably prefer Cena vs. Mysterio. Cena could, on paper, win the WWE Championship at Fastlane. But that is an extreme long shot at this point.
It seems like a certainty that Big Match John will take on either The Phenom or the master of the 619 at WrestleMania 34. The odds probably favor The Undertaker at this point, but Mysterio is still in the running as well. After all, Cena did already call out The Undertaker for a WrestleMania 34 challenge on the most recent edition of Raw, although he did brush it off.
But Cena insinuating the match with Taker wouldn’t happen might confirm that it will, in fact, happen. Big Match John’s WrestleMania days could be winding down, so getting another potential marquee match for him is important in 2018.
