Does Rusev Stand A Chance At The Greatest Royal Rumble?
By Jack Clayton
Rusev is about to have possibly the biggest match in his WWE career.
It It has been a weird couple of weeks for the Bulgarian Brute. It was announced a few weeks ago that he would be facing the Undertaker in a Casket match at the Greatest Royal Rumble. Not long after, it was announced that Chris Jericho would be taking his place in the match.
Not much was known as to why Rusev was replaced in the match. In fact speculation started to make itself around that he was on his way out of the WWE. But ultimately, he was slotted back into the match.
But now that he’s back in the match, the speculation has once again resurfaced as to whether or not he has a chance. After all, he is facing the Undertaker, one of the most protected superstars in WWE history.
On one hand, if he were to win, it would be the start of a great push for Rusev. It could even be the start of getting him into the WWE Championship picture. The same thing happened to Brock Lesnar in 2014 after he beat the Undertaker at WrestleMania. Right after that, he transitioned into a world title feud with John Cena, and ultimately won. So who’s to say the same can’t happen to Rusev?
On the other hand though, it is the Undertaker. He is one of, if not the most protected superstars in WWE history. Especially considering the match is happening at a special event for the first time, logic would swing towards Undertaker winning. With him winning for the first time, it would make for a special moment to forward his momentum towards his possible retirement at next year’s WrestleMania.

But if Rusev were to lose, it would be damaging an overlooked talent once again. For over a year, Rusev has been overlooked constantly, whether it be winning the United States Championship at WrestleMania, or winning the WWE Championship ever.
If Rusev loses, it may damage his momentum for the rest of his career. He may be a two time United States Champion, but he has yet to receive the massive push that he deserves. His “Rusev Day” gimmick has been one of the most over gimmicks in the past few years. And the fact that WWE has yet to truly capitalize on it yet is disappointing.

So the question remains: Does Rusev stand a chance in his Casket Match against the Undertaker at the Greatest Royal Rumble? At this point, all signs point to no, which is a shame. But if he were to end up winning, not only would it be surprising, but well deserved of a frequently overlooked talent.
