Our reactions:
Harmony: I’m going long on this one. Sorry.
I am 100% that dork that cries at wrestling matches and I am pleased to share I was in tears by the end of this match. I didn’t expect to mark out while I was watching it, as it seemed like a foregone conclusion that Charlie would be walking out with the belt. Charlie and Sammii are just so good I forgot what I was expecting and let them tell the story instead. I think that’s all you can ask from a match like this.
The story set up by this match is another example of the storytelling that EVE does really well. In one corner we have Sammii Jayne, the main event empress. Sammii is technically evil; from the second she started gloating about how she’d debilitated Rhia O’Reilly, the way ambition was twisting her was made clear. But Sammii kept the belt by being an incredible (if underhanded) wrestler. Nobody who watches her in the ring can say she didn’t deserve that belt, or that she didn’t fight with everything in her to keep it. She’s a monster heel on the power of her abilities, and even though the story told us Charlie SHOULD win, it wasn’t implausible or unearned for Sammii to retain.
On the other hand, we have Charlie Morgan, the brave upstart who wants to dethrone evil Sammii and claim the championship for herself. Charlie is also skilled, but beyond that, Charlie is all guts. She knows what she deserves, and she knows it can be hers if she’s brave enough to do everything it takes to claim it. From the second she steps into the ring, and Sammii tries to crowd her against the turnbuckle, Charlie only has eyes for the belt. This is her hero moment, and nothing is going to stand between her and her deserved happy ending.
Charlie Morgan is the kind of wrestler who is incredibly easy to root for. She isn’t an underdog exactly, but she is fearless, and her single-minded determination to be the champion is what carried this match. The part where Charlie flipped off a balcony to bodyslam Sammii would have been the finisher in any other event, but that was just her getting started. Charlie’s courage and determination kept her upright in the face of a truly incredible onslaught from Sammii, who was equally hellbent on retaining. I’m kind of amazed and grateful both came out of the match intact.
So yeah, when Charlie finally (FINALLY) pinned Sammii after a brutal exchange of suplexes, I cried a bit. It is inspirational to watch someone achieve things by the strength of their heart, and I was so happy it was Charlie Morgan who had done it. What a match, what a main event, what an ending. Well done, Wrestle Queendom.
Joe: I can’t say enough about the story this match told. For months, Sammii Jayne, as the Pro Wrestling EVE champion, had been talking down to Charlie Morgan, insulting her at every turn, and enlisting the help of her crony Jetta. This was Morgan’s chance to get her comeuppance by taking the title off of Jayne, and the Ace of EVE did exactly that!
Morgan performed a somersault off of the balcony, kicked out of the same finisher that Jayne once beat her with, and showed the heart of a champion. Jayne wouldn’t go down quietly, though, as she kicked out of the implant DDT, forcing Morgan to hit that move off of a ladder in order to claim the defining victory.
I mean, this battle was all about revenge. Jayne brought out a table? Morgan put her through it (the spot itself was executed so quickly that I’m still shook). Jayne wanted to jump off a ladder? Morgan raised her one better by jumping off the dang balcony.
The Ace persevered to finally grab the title, fighting past several submission holds, as Jayne relentlessly attempted to wrench Morgan’s arm out of her socket after spending the initial moments of the match (following the brawl) working that arm.
I couldn’t be happier that Morgan won, and the emotions from the crowd when Morgan got the 1-2-3 were incredible. THIS is how you end a show, and Charlie f**king Morgan is poised to be a tremendous champion for Pro Wrestling EVE.
