Fans eagerly awaiting Rey Mysterio to return to WWE are going to have to wait a bit longer…

Thursday night, New Japan Pro Wrestling announced that Rey Mysterio will be working the G1 Climax Finals show on August 12th in Budokan Hall. His opponent hasn’t been confirmed, on a card as impressive as the G1 Finals should be, it’s an added bonus even seeing Mysterio on the show.

This news may come as a surprise to those who have been keeping updated on Mysterio. Earlier this week, reports suggested that he’d finalized a deal and would be returning to Raw or Smackdown Live sometime around SummerSlam. Evidently, this doesn’t seem to be the case based on NJPW’s announcement.

Of course, it’s important to note that WWE often allows new signees to complete already agreed to dates when they officially sign their contracts. And while WWE often includes a non-compete clause that prevents working for other companies after leaving, most of the time a new talent can debut immediately after working for another promotion. Remember the Hardy Boyz at WrestleMania 33?

Rest assured, it seems to be just a matter of time until Rey is wrestling for WWE again. This is certainly just a small detour on his road back to the company. However, it may not be the only detour.

More from Daily DDT

Dave Meltzer reports that Mysterio wants to be beaten for his Crash Lucha Libre Heavyweight Championship and fulfill his commitment to All In before officially reuniting with WWE full time. At this point, there’s no way of knowing exactly when El Rey will make his triumphant return, so we’ll just have to wait and see.

It’s safe to say that Mysterio’s appearance at Dominion left something to be desired. So, for fans of NJPW, this is exciting news. We can only speculate on who he will be facing at the G1 Finals, but there’s certainly no shortage of fantastic potential opponents. We could get the match with Jyushin Thunder Liger that didn’t get to happen at Strong Style Evolved due to injury. Or, we could see a dream match against one of NJPW’s finest Jr Heavyweights like Will Ospreay, Marty Scurll, or KUSHIDA.
